Fantasy and romance are two things that seem to work well together, which is what makes A24’s upcoming film Eternity one we’ve got our eye on. The cast is no slouch either: starting Elizabeth Olsen alongside Miles Teller and Callum Turner, it follows a woman (Olsen), who dies and enters the afterlife and must choose whether to spend eternity with her husband, or a long-lost love from years before. Set to release in cinemas in November, here’s all we know so far:

What is Eternity about?

Eternity is set in a world where death isn’t the end: after you die, everyone is given one week to choose where and who to spend your time with- forever. When Joan, played by Olsen, reaches the end of her life, she appears in the afterlife and finds herself asked to make this choice for herself. Her husband and the man she built an entire lifetime with is Larry, played by Teller, and surely seems like an obvious pick as a companion for all of eternity. But Joan is less interested in the place she’ll end up, and instead fixates on the possibility of choosing another candidate to be with: her first husband Luke (played by Callum Turner). Joan and Luke were married long ago, before the events of the film, and it was her first love. But after he was tragically killed in a war, she assumed she’d never see him again, until the afterlife, of course.

To help people along in this temporary purgatory, special “afterlife assistants” are employed, with Ryan (John Early) being Joan’s. Larry’s co-ordinator, meanwhile, is Anna, played by Oscar-winning Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and both dispense their advice to (and bicker over) the recently deceased. Larry is shocked at the idea that Joan might not want to spend the rest of eternity with him- would she really want to turn him down after all those years?

The official trailer introduces us to each of these characters, and we’re shown an afterlife quite different from your usual depictions. There are no clouds and wings and golden gates here, but rather Larry is shown waking up on a train, before arriving in what seems to be a large train station and being told he has entered the afterlife. After he spots Joan, the two are both greeted by Luke, and Joan is clearly overwhelmed by having both husbands there. Unsurprisingly, both Larry and Luke immediately begin competing for her affections: “It’s not a competition”, she claims. “Yes, it is!” they shout back in unison.
