If you’ve been looking for a new comedy series to get stuck into while you wait for shows like Only Murders In The Building to return, then Disney+’s new series Extraordinary might be the answer. The show gives the superhero genre a comedic twist and is set in a world where everyone develops a superpower after 18 years old- except for Jen, who’s 25 and apparently doesn’t have one.

Set in London, Máiréad Tyers (Belfast) stars in the central role of Jen, who feels left behind compared to everyone else who has all developed incredible powers. So much so that’s on she’s on the verge of falling into an endless hole of self-pity and wallowing in misery. Luckily she has flatmates, Carrie (Sofia Oxenham) and Kash (Bilal Hasna) that keep her from doing so. Her problems aren’t helped by being stuck in a dull dead-end job, and in an on-off relationship with Luke (Ned Porteous), a boy who doesn’t show any signs of wanting to commit.

Carrie, who can talk to the dead, and boyfriend Kash, who can travel back in time, both pledge to help Jen find her power, along with the mysterious stray cat they live with unfortunately named Jizzlord. As she sets out on a journey to try and discover her potential superpower, she ponders whether there might actually be an advantage in being just “herself.”

Extraordinary is written by Northern Irish comedy writer Emma Moran, and also stars Siobhán McSweeney (best known as Sister Michael in Derry Girls), Robbie Gee (Paddington 2), Eros Vlahos (Game of Thrones), Safia Oakley-Green (Sherwood), Luke Rollason (Jack) and Patricia Allison (Sex Education).

The official trailer for Disney Plus’ Extraordinary introduces us immediately to Jen, rattling off her insecurities to an employer during a job interview before we see her feeling left out by all her friends receiving their powers. “You’re such a brave little soldier,” Carrie tells her. “I haven’t got a power yet, I’m not, like, terminal” responds Jen. It might have superpowers and plenty of youthful angst, but Extraordinary isn’t for kids, with the eight-episode series firmly belonging to the adult comedy genre (if the name Jizzlord didn’t tip you off).

You can binge all eight parts on Disney+ now, and if you enjoyed it, can feel excited for the second season, which was confirmed before the series was released.
