One TV’s best surprises in the last few years was the debut of Fallout, a post-apocalyptic drama set in a retro-futuristic world. It soon became a smash hit for Prime Video and helped propel Ella Purnell towards stardom. Now, its eagerly awaited second season is to start in December, and will see Lucy (Purnell) and the Ghoul (Walton Goggins) taken to new and more dangerous places. Expect it to keep the show’s signature sense of humour, too- here’s all we know about season 2:

What is Fallout Season 2 about?

Fallout’s first season introduced us to Lucy, a woman who has lived her entire life in an underground vault, 200 years after a devastating nuclear war. The TV series, based on the hugely popular video games of the same name, is set in a retro-futuristic version of America with incredible nuclear-powered technology and 1940s and 50s aesthetics. Having left her vault and left the wasteland of Los Angeles, Lucy meets radiation-deformed bounty hunter the Ghoul/Cooper Howard, played by The White Lotus star Walton Goggins. Following the events of Season 1, the second season will see the pair travel to New Vegas, a reconstructed version of Las Vegas, where Lucy hopes to find out more about her father.

There’s plenty of treachery and unsavoury characters awaiting them, as both fend for their lives and try to discover what kind of person the other truly is. Purnell has teased the new season as being something of a “buddy road trip”, as the truth about Lucy’s father remains elusive. Another key character we and Lucy first met in Season 1 is Maximus (Aaron Motrin), a member of the powerful organisation, the Brotherhood of Steel, who uses a mechanised suit of armour. He’ll have his own arc this season, as he prepares for an approaching war and hopes to reunite with Lucy. There’ll be more of the wasteland roaming, gun battles and mutants that have made the series such a hit- and potential answers to burning questions. Will Lucy adapt to The Ghoul’s more cold-hearted approach, or vice-versa? And who is the mysterious Mr House (Justin Theroux), whom the Ghoul seems to have a past with and is an important figure in New Vegas?

What else do we know, and is there a release date?

Also returning to the cast from Season 1 is Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks, Desperate Housewives), who plays Lucy’s father Hank and was kidnapped, while Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin will also have a role. Season 2 episodes will also be released weekly, rather than all at once like last time, beginning on 17th December.
