Tom Hanks And Robin Wright Reunite In New Family Drama, Here
Forrest Gump was one of the biggest hit films of the 90s- and now it’s two main stars, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, have reunited with director Robert Zemeckis for the new family drama film Here, set to arrive in the UK in January after its release in the US this month. It follows multiple generations of couples and families that inhabit the same house over many decades- and is shot all from one camera angle in the home. It’s certainly an ambitious project- so here’s everything you need to know:
What is Here about?
Here, as with another film this year, The Brutalist, tells an American story over seven years. It features the many different inhabitants of one single household and piece of land. Moving mainly through the 20th century and into the 2000s, our two main characters are a couple: Richard (Hanks) and Margaret (Wright). To achieve the look of the pair moving through different eras of their lives, from youth to parenthood to older age, the film uses digital de-ageing tech on Hanks and Wright. Essentially, the aim is to make the two stars look as they did in the 80s and 90s, which of course is a tricky effect to pull off convincingly. It also has the novelty of being shot from one camera position in one room of the house, meaning it gives the vibe of a stage play, with characters entering and exiting across the story.
The film, which is based on a graphic novel of the same name by Richard McGuire, is told in a non-linear narrative, so it jumps back and forth in time, including when the house is built, and later first bought by Richard’s parents, Al (played by Paul Bettany) and Rose (played by Kelly Reilly). Eventually, Richard and Margaret have a child, Vanessa, and the film’s emotional core is the Young family. There are others though who live in the house at different points in time, including Pauline (Michelle Dockery) and John Harter (Gwilym Lee), the first couple to live in the house, as well as Devon (Nicholas Pinnock) and Helen Harris (Nikki Amuka-Bird). All of these characters and families have their own unique experiences, played out in front of the camera.
What else do we know, and when does it release?
The film’s trailer gives a glimpse of the time jumping in the film- even including the plot of land that the house will one day occupy in the prehistoric era, dinosaurs and all. The dialogue in the trailer makes a point of emphasising this small corner of the world and what it means to its occupants: “Here is where we want to be!” Richard says to his daughter while reading a book to her. “I could spend the rest of my life here,” says Margaret in a separate scene. Expect plenty of the emotional highs and lows of life, from birth to death, first love to marriage, youth to old age. The drama will be released in UK cinemas on 17th January- and you can watch the trailer below.
