Prince of Wales checks, cosy Aaron knits and layers of tartan make a return this season as heritage fashion is having a moment once again.

Every year, a few fashion moments send a tremor of excitement through the industry – The Met Ball or that Chemena Kamali debut Chloé show. One such moment that happened a lot close to home this year was the achingly romantic, stunning homage to the Scottish Highlands at Dior’s Resort’25 show. The setting? The lavish grounds of Scotland’s 15th century Drummond Castle, where models were decked out in lace, tweed, tartan and velvet. It felt traditional but refreshingly new, a reverence to old craftsmanship and beautiful but practical clothes.

It also spawned – or rather resurged – the heritage trend. A look that never really goes away thanks to its timeless, look and undeniable functionality, but one we are more than happy to embrace as the nights draw in and temperatures fall. Other brands have iterated the look via Fair Isle knits and long heavy wool coats in classic checks, cosy Aaron jumpers and layers of tartan that sit somewhere between Mary Queen of Scots and Dame Westwood.

Areverence to old craftsmanship and beautiful but practical clothes.

These are clothes you’ll want to wear everywhere – on cold commutes or traipsing through the mud on a UK staycation, Barbour and wellies on top.

There are different ways to work the trend, whether you want to dip your toe into it and keep it modern or go full Highland fling. We love a classic menswear-style blazer in a grey or brown check paired with this season’s barrel jeans and scrunchy suede boots for a nod to heritage. Or, fall a little bit deeper and pair a cable knit cardigan with a kilt-style tartan skirt. Damson Madder and La Veste are brands to check out for the latter, whilst Anine Bing is top of our wish list when it comes to a wear-everywhere check blazer.

Keep things relaxed with a pair of slouchy check, herringbone or tartan trousers, styled with a muted Fairisle knit and chunky loafers.
