Anyone who has skied their last run of the season is likely already planning their next trip. That white stuff is properly addictive — the promise of fresh powder, bluebird days, uninterrupted runs, and of course, aprés. But boy, it can be expensive.

While the French Alps continue to hike prices for the privilege of overcrowded pistes, I’m here with a handy PSA: the Austrian Tyrol is offering a masterclass in ‘stealth-wealth’ ski escapes. Having been there numerous times, I can report firsthand that Austria offers the finest of everything the Alps have to offer, with plenty more warmth and hospitality.

My latest discovery — the Hotel Böglerhof in Alpach — is nestled in the snowy mountains, under an hour from Innsbruck airport. Stay with me for the insider track on why this is the definitive destination to bookmark for next ski season, before the rest catch on.

The location

Alpbach has been voted ‘Austria’s Most Beautiful Village’ – and it’s easy to see why. Thanks to strict building codes, every single chalet is built from traditional timber and stone, so it’s like stepping into a real-life snow globe. Alpbach feels intimate, exclusive, and blissfully free of the usual fancy ski resort ‘see-and-be-seen’ circus.

Being just 45 minutes from Innsbruck means you can be off an early flight and on the slopes by lunchtime.

What sets it apart

With new 5-star amenities, from the glass-fronted saunas to the vaulted Fuggerstube dining room, it delivers a level of opulence that would easily cost double in the Trois Vallées. This 500-year-old former mining court has been in the same family for generations.

You feel that in the personal greeting from the team (including your family name listed on the welcome chalkboard outside) and its old-worldy charm, but then you step into the brand-new ‘Pure Nature’ wing and realise you’re in one of the most forward-thinking hotels in the Alps.

This is a hotel that feels like a cosy, wool-clad hug but delivers the slick, high-spec luxury of a Mayfair member’s club.

The skiing

The ‘Ski Juwel’ Alpbachtal Wildschönau area offers 113km of pristine, pine-fringed runs that cater to everyone from the blue-run-and-long-lunch crowd to serious off-piste hunters. Because the resort isn’t overrun by the masses, lift lines are practically non-existent — meaning you actually spend your day skiing rather than shuffling in a queue. Plus, there is a night skiing area for those really wanting to maximise on piste time.

The rooms

Think Alpine-chic at its most refined. The rooms in the new wing are a masterclass in organic luxe: lots of fragrant local stone pine (proven to lower your heart rate, FYI), floor-to-ceiling glass to drink in those mountain views, and textures so soft you’ll want to pack the rug in your suitcase.

If you can, bag a nature suite as I did — there is nothing quite like defrosting in your own wooden sanctuary with a view of the Kitzbühel Alps.

The facilities

The Pure Nature Spa absolutely Blew. Me. Away. We’re talking a sprawling, heated indoor-outdoor pool where you can swim while the snow falls and an adjacent natural swimming lake for the brave-hearted. The adults-only sauna area is all glass and light, offering panoramic views of the peaks and a glorious outdoor fire pit to cool off around.

It’s mandatory nudity, naturally — although no fear, all you prudes, there’s a cheeky ‘How to Sauna’ guide and modesty-friendly kilts for those not quite ready for the full Austrian Nacktkultur.

My favourite were the red light sauna chairs – focused treatment for the spine that I’ve never experienced before, so welcome after a day of downhill runs.

It’s the kind of wellness space that makes you realise ‘self-care’ was SURELY invented in the Tyrol.

Food & drink

Dining at the Böglerhof is a serious affair. The ¾ gourmet board means you’re treated to an extensive breakfast, afternoon ‘Marende’ (the Tyrolean answer to high tea), and a multi-course dinner.

Such great value, especially given you can self-serve from an impressive buffet before your à la carte courses are brought to you.

The crown jewel is the Fuggerstube, a 15th-century wood-panelled, vaulted-ceiling room where the fine dining is as rich as the history. Pair your venison with a bottle from their impressive cellar — the sommelier knows his stuff, and the prices are refreshingly grounded.

Outside of the hotel, options are plentiful, but I’d recommend Connie’s, a short walk up from the gondola, for a surprisingly varied menu for the mountains.

Including non-alpine options such as poke bowls and light salads, this is perfect for balancing the more substantial Tyrolean fare found elsewhere.

How to book

Ski season in Alpach runs from early December until mid-April and costs from €233 per person per night based on two sharing a double room on a ¾ gourmet board basis.

The verdict

With an incredible heritage and better facilities, Hotel Böglerhof is significantly more attractive than the inflated resorts of the French Alps.

If you want 5-star luxury without a 5-star pretension or price tag, then Hotel Böglerhof is your play for next season.
