A New Documentary About The Killing Of John Lennon Is Coming To Apple TV+
This year Apple TV+ has made some great documentaries, like the fashion throwback The Supermodels and the eerily creepy The Enfield Poltergeist and now, the streamer is making a documentary about one of the world’s most beloved musicians: John Lennon.
Narrated by 24 and Designated Survivor star Kiefer Sutherland, the new three-part series looks at the infamous 1980 assassination of the former Beatle, 43 years after his death shocked the world. Key figures from Lennon’s life, as well as those who knew him, recount their experiences before and after one of the darkest days in music.
What is John Lennon: Murder Without A Trial about?
It’s only been a few weeks since The Beatles released their “final song”, Now and Then, which features the vocals of the late singer and involvement from the other three band members, so Apple’s project is certainly timely. Almost everyone knows the story of the event: an apparently obsessive fan shooting down Lennon at just 40 years old outside his apartment in New York, prompting waves of mourning. But Murder Without A Trial wants to shed new light on the event, with a focus on both the Beatle himself and his killer Mark David Chapman.
There’s plenty of discussion about the murderer’s motives, like the book The Catcher in the Rye and wanting infamy- but the team behind the series told Rolling Stone magazine that they’re keen to remain impartial and not overly glamourise the perpetrator.
Is there a trailer?
Apple TV+ released debuted the first trailer for the series titled “Untold”, which begins with shots of the mass memorials around the world after John Lennon’s death, before showing some of the figures interviewed. Some of these are Richard Peterson, a taxi driver who saw the assassination, Joe Many, a porter at Lennon’s apartment building, Jay Hastings, who heard the singer’s last words, and Ron Hoffman, an NYPD detective.
Together, Apple says, they “share personal memories and reveal what happened on the night of his killing.” The trailer ends with a quote from Lennon himself: “Nobody has ever given peace a complete chance, Ghandi tried it, Mather Luther King tried it, but they were shot.”
When can I watch the documentary?
If you’re intrigued to see the series, whether knowing little about Lennon’s death or are a hardcore Beatles fan, then you can watch it when the three parts drop on Apple TV+ on 6th December. You can watch the trailer below.
