Surely Christmas must be the most indulgent day of the year when everyone feasts to their heart’s content with food breaks taken, unjudged by your peers and family members who will be joining you? The only downside is all the work that goes into preparing Christmas lunch, from food shopping, to slaving over the oven, to all the clearing up afterwards. Well we say bah humbug to the downside and have gathered a list of our best places for Christmas lunch where your only job is to turn up and eat!


What: A traditional roast

Why: Enjoy a traditional Christmas menu with all the trimmings including half a bottle of wine with live jazz band as entertainment from 12pm until 4pm. For added convenience, why not consider staying over the night before and enjoying a hearty breakfast the next morning? What: A snug setting to keep Jack Frost at bay

Why: Christmas is all about relaxing and where better than in front of a cosy open fire as you tuck The Lady Ottoline’s indulgent festive menu which features dishes like duck liver parfait and toasted sourdough, Game pie with brussels tops and chestnut, and prune & armagnac tart with thick Jersey cream. Why: Take advantage of Bistrotheque’s private dining area which seats 96 people with the menu offering starters like mackerel pate, radishes and pickled onions on toast. Mains include dishes like pork belly, braised leeks and caramel apple sauce or leek, fennel, Keen’s cheddar pie, and all come with roast potatoes, carrots, swede, turnips, sprouts and gravy. Stick with a more classic option of date pudding with brandy butter and spiced ice cream for dessert with more typical desserts like chocolate mousse, shortbread and candied fennel.

What: A month of Christmas dinners

Why: The Bingham is the perfect setting for an annual Christmas get-together, be it the big family do (which you complain about but secretly love) or the long-awaited reunion of friends not seen for way too long. Their festive lunch menu is available throughout the whole of December and consists of such dishes as chestnut veloute with a smoked bacon crisp and shaved apple, seasonal delights such as pumpkin soufflé and unmistakably festive favourites such as mulled wine trifle.

What: A banquet feast

Why: Just because you aren’t eating at home doesn’t mean that you can’t eat to your hearts content, over at The Chelsea Harbour Hotel choose from their Banquet menu which includes dishes like the duo of cured salmon, roasted free range turkey parcel and vegetable wellington. Dessert is a traditional Christmas pudding with Hennessy cream.

What: A Family Festive Feast in One Whitehall Place

Why: If you are looking for a relaxed family Christmas Day with the family, this is the perfect option for you as adults get a reprieve with a dedicated children’s room near the dining room where they can be kept entertained by a visit from Father Christmas – the real one we imagine. A large selection of festive and traditional favourite food items will feature on the menu, available from 12.30pm – 5.00pm.

What: Family Christmas lunch at the Belgraves restaurant, Pont St

Why: Executive Chef, Sophie Michell, hosts this year’s 4 course Christmas lunch with canapes to start. Starters include a lobster and crab cocktail with avocado, chilli, yuzu and tomato, mains – aged, rare breed fillet with celeriac gratin, sweet onion puree and savoy cabbage fricassee, and to finish Mont Blanc, layers of sweetened chestnut, meringue and whipped cream. What: Christmas day lunch with great views of the river

Why: Spend your Christmas, relaxing and soaking up views of the Thames at Mondrian where the menu feast begins with a glass of Champagne and canapés before settling down for a three course dinner. Alongside traditional dishes you can also choose dishes like wood roasted celeriac soup with winter truffles, and grilled sea bream with a citrus herb salad and preserved lemon dressing.
