It’s jolly boating weather, so how better to celebrate than to swing together to one of these spots serving some of London’s best Eton Mess. Eton College may have given us Boris Johnson, 18 prime ministers, half the last cabinet, the archbishop of Canterbury and our future king, but let’s not hold all that against them, after all they’ve also given us one of the best puddings known to mankind. The dish, full of meringuey, strawberryish goodness is pretty much a national dessert and the perfect summer pudding. So let’s get stuck in…
Eton Less Mess
Firstly to Manetta’s bar at the Flemings Mayfair Hotel, who have put a fine-dining twist on the Eton Mess. In the process of making it less messy they’ve also added Champagne and popped together a Wimbledon sharing package including two glasses of Champagne Devaux each and an Eton Mess sharing plate.
Where: 7-12 Half Moon Street, Mayfair, W1J 7BH
Hit The Roof
The view is undeniably amazing, I mean, seeing a fresh strawberry and elderflower Eton mess, topped with whipped cream and sweet brown sugar meringue close-to is incredible, but the vista across East London ain’t too bad either. Aviary Rooftop may be the best place to marvel at the city, but this dish is even more reason to visit. Maybe try one of their frozen cocktails to boot, like their watermelon Margarita or a smooth passionfruit Martini.
Where: 10th Floor Montcalm Royal London House Hotel, 22-25 Finsbury Square, London EC2A 1DX
Nearest station: Moorgate (Great Northern) (0.2 miles)
Defies Physics (sort of)
Specially for Wimbledon, P.F. Chang’s Asian Table have devised an Eton Mess for the event. Fresh from their pastry lab, the creation includes strawberries, cream and meringue (all pretty standard so far…) but with a physics-defying white chocolate tennis racket and a macaroon tennis ball.
Where: 10 Great Newport Street, WC2H 7JA
Rich Puddings In Richmond
Richmond’s Petersham Hotel is serving a special Wimbledon themed Eton mess served with Chantilly cream and meringue and all sculpted into a special tennis theme. The hotel, with a stunning vista across the Thames and, somewhere on the horizon, Eton itself, is the perfect place to enjoy the championships and, more importantly, some Eton mess.
Where: The Petersham Hotel, Nightingale Lane, Richmond, TW10 6UZ
Nearest station: Richmond (0.8 miles)
Mini But Deadly
As rooftops go this has to be one of my favourites, partly the view but perhaps more than a little down to their Wimbledon themed drink and dessert menu, including (drum roll) Eton mess. In mini form, the Eton mess will accompany a mini strawberry and almond tartlet and a mini mojito ice cream.
Where: ME London, 336-337 Strand, WC2R 1HA
Nearest station: Temple (0.3 miles)
To Covent Garden and Le Restaurant de PAUL who have thrown together an unmessable Eton mess, with generous layers of everything! With positively ‘lashings’ of cream this might as well be a main course. Served in both Covent Garden and their Broadgate restaurant, it’s mouth wateringly good.
Where: 29 Bedford Street, Covent Garden, WC2E 9ED
This one makes it in on the strength of the pun alone! The Maida Mess in Maida Vale’s The Hero of Maida serves their mess in the traditional fashion and it goes brilliantly with a Sunday roast and a healthy dollop of Wimbledon action.
Where: 55 Shirland Road, Maida Vale, W9 2JD
