If you’re after a heady mix of culture, delicious food, fine wines and a little party, then make Bordeaux your next mini break. A short flight from London, this historical city is magical, but checking in to the urban chic Mama Shelter will feel like utter escapism. Offering sleek rooms, a buzzy atmosphere and spectacular views, we  knew we were guaranteed a great getaway…

First Impressions

Breathtaking. Honestly, arriving in this French city is like walking onto the set of Beauty And The Beast. The architecture, cobbled streets and bustling pavement restaurants feel both olde world and cosmopolitan. In fact, it’s like Paris only pared back; quieter, calmer yet with an undercurrent of laid-back sophistication. Mama Shelter, while no less sophisticated, definitely turns up the party vibe. Situated on a quiet street you’d be forgiven for feeling slightly unnerved, but on entering you’re hit with a welcoming hum of activity and excitement.

What Makes It Stand Out

Mama Shelter Bordeaux is part of the ever-expanding, design-led hotel chain. Founded by Serge Trigano and his sons Jérémie and Benjamin, the brand has celebrated a daring ‘urban refuge’ concept since 2008, starting with its first in Paris’ off-beat 20th district and Bordeaux opening in 2013. It now has places across the globe from Los Angeles to Belgrade.

Set against the backdrop of such an ornate city steeped in history, this Bordeaux hotel branch feels bold and modern. It promises a playfulness to counteract the seriousness of the surrounding museums; plus a late-night club feel for those wishing to keep the party going.

The Bedrooms

Housed in the former headquarters of France’s national gas company with 97 bedrooms of varying sizes from small to XXL, Mama Shelter caters to every kind of guest – whether you’re after a solo workcation, a relaxing couple’s getaway, or a family minibreak. Beds make the focal point of each room, inviting you to flop down and take the weight off your feet; powder pink walls incite instant calm and elegant calligraphy penned across the ceiling injects a hint of classicism.

I stayed in a Large Mama Room overlooking the city, which offered the perfect mix of space and comfort. Welcome notes were scribbled across the mirror adding a personal touch, while superhero masks hung as decor were a gentle reminder that this place was all about the fun. The lit-up headboard was the perfect finishing detail, imbuing a warm glow to an otherwise minimalist room.

Equipped with a desk, smart TV and a mini kitchen area, the room was perfectly set up whether you’re visiting for work or leisure.

The Rooftop

From the dark, neon-lit bar below you emerge six floors up to light and mesmerising views from this somewhat famed Bordeaux locale. Prepare to watch the sun go down and take in this city’s remarkable landscape dominated by the magnificent Cathédrale Saint André.

Yet again, a playfulness is encouraged and embraced through brightly coloured seating and festoon lighting, while the bar is framed by childhood rubber rings – our favourite was the unicorn. Homemade tapas are served alongside signature cocktails and regional wines We could easily have spent hours under the fringed parasols and missed all that Bordeaux has to offer.

Food & Drink

A veritable feast is the only way I can describe the tasty abundance of dishes, delicacies and drinks. This Mama really does love you. From a hearty breakfast of melt-in-your-mouth croissants and cooked meats to huge Burrata pizzas and tender rib steaks for dinner, the vibe is very much French meets Italian. However, being in one of the largest cities in France we had to partake in a charcuterie board. Boasting an assortment of rich deli foods including Jambon de Bayonne, chorizo de la vallée des Aldudes, smooth pâté, creamy Ossau Iraty cheese and pepper butter, it did not disappoint. Washed down with Château Surain merlot, it was the perfect meal to kickstart our gastronomique getaway.

The breakfast spread was phenomenal. Featuring everything from fresh detox juices to ease the effects of the night before to buttery pastries and cooked meats. It could have kept us going all day.

As one of the most renowned wine regions, you ought to sample a glass of vino. Clearly, we’d suggest savouring the more local grapes, but you’ll also find varieties from Argentina, Australia and South Africa on the menu. The staff, all of whom are exceptionally friendly, will guide you through their own personal favourites. If, on the other hand, you’ve moved into late night party territory, I’d highly recommend one of Mama’s cocktails. Colourful, fruity and fresh, you can chose anything from the vodka-based Belém to a rum Mamaï Taï.

If you’ve had a long day exploring the sights on foot, Mama Shelter offers a playful retreat and a lighthearted atmosphere.

What To Do

It would be rude not to get out and explore those winding streets and waterfront restaurants, so pull yourself away from Mama and start by heading to the Miroir d’Eau. Located across from the Place de la Bourse, this insta-worthy reflective pool designed by landscape artist Michel Corajoud is an outstanding show of  impeccable architecture. It’s now listed as a contemporary World Heritage Site by Unesco.

We sauntered along the quayside taking in the magnificent 18th Century facades and the Garonne river while making our way to La Cité Du Vin. This celebrated wine museum is a grandiose sculptured-looking structure showcasing everything you’d ever need to know about our go-to tipple.  We can neither confirm nor deny, that the option to taste also had a draw.

For foodies, the Halles de Bacalan is a must. The vibrant market in the heart of the Bassins à Flots district is bustling with cool young things sampling Bordelaise products and recipes from 22 farmers, artisan-traders and regional chefs. And yes, the sweet vanilla and rum canelés are as good as they say.

Take a break from eating and check out the shops for seriously chic clothing and interiors. Head to Kidur for vintage-inspired menswear perfection, which also happens to be co-responsible and sustainable. For recognised French labels and womenswear, like Isabel Marant, pop into Ma Première Boutique.

The Verdict

Simple, fun and affordable. This hotel is more about the people than where you rest your head. The minimal rooms, while chic, encourage you to join in, either in the lively bar or stunning rooftop. It has a youthful air with an energetic spirit, not to mention mouth-watering food and delicious cocktails. We’re already considering a return.
