Maximalist Interior Design Is Everywhere & It’s The Perfect Antidote To January Blues
If the thought of off-grey, beige and blush pink brings you out in a rash when talking about interiors, this is the trend for you. Dopamine-inducing, unfiltered and delightfully OTT maximalist interior design is everywhere right now and they might just be the antidote to the January blues we all need. From lacquered furniture in pink and red to bold art prints, quirky home accessories to statement lighting, here’s how to make the look work in your home…
I don’t know about you but for years it felt like blush pink and pale grey dominated the interior world. It was clean, uniform, and Instagram-friendly (at least we thought it was) but it was also boring. Thank the lord that colourful interiors are back in the limelight, with a host of Instagram creators sharing their dopamine-inducing interiors and online interior brands like Glassette, Collagerie and Mrs Alice cheerleading for the full spectrum of colour, kooky pieces and one-of-a-kind gems.
It’s a bold look, sure, but it’s far more easily achieved than you might think. If you’re apprehensive about where to start, lead with one hero piece you love. This could be a statement rug, a beautiful wallpaper or a piece of art that speaks to you. From there, pick out some of the colours and start to build your own colour palette.
My other rule of thumb is to be playful and brave with texture and shape. If you have one common thread – the colour palette, for instance – personality and energy can be brought in through different textures. Don’t just go for what looks neat or comfy, choose shapes that look a bit strange like Laetitia Rouget’s quirky candleholders or Hannah Simpson’s wonky lampshades. After all, isn’t there something beautiful and strange about things that are a little bit off?
If you’re looking to invest in big-ticket items, there’s a case for vintage when it comes to this look. Anemone Interiors are masters at sourcing one-off vintage pieces from around the globe and their current 1980s pink vanity desk will create an instant mood in an at-home study or bedroom. Not new but equally as lust-worthy is The Lacquer Co.’s collaboration with artist, designer and general tastemaker Luke Edward Hall. His red and pink Bendict chest will not only offer valuable storage space but also act as a base for a multitude of curated and unique pieces on top.
Finally, the idea for this trend is that there really are no rules. Rather, it’s about personality and filling your home with things you love and that bring you joy. With that in mind, it’s a lovely way to support independent brands, from the multicoloured salt and pepper mills of Addison Ross to the plump love seats in candy stripes by Buchanan Studio.
