Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite was released back in 2019, gathering critical acclaim and becoming the first foreign language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. The director’s next film has been widely anticipated, and details of it have finally been revealed: Mickey 17 is set to release in 2024, but there are already details and a short trailer to sit on until then. It’s a sci-fi dystopian thriller with The Batman star Robert Pattinson as its lead.

Mickey17, starring Robert Pattinson, is Bong Joon-ho’s first in English since Okja (2017) and is based on a similar sci-fi novel by author Edward Ashton, which is named Mickey 7 rather than 17. Pattinson plays a space traveller who’s sent on a mission to colonise an ice planet called Niflheim. The titular Mickey, the traveller, is considered expendable by his employers and is forced to take on the borderline suicidal assignment, which is fraught with danger. Mickey has already “died” several times, but a new body is created each time with the memories mostly intact, hence him being Mickey 17.

The teaser trailer for the film doesn’t give much more plot detail, but it does give a sense of the style that the director is bringing to the film: it shows Pattinson as Mickey, apparently in a deep sleep in a cryogenic freezer. Dramatic classical music plays as the title forms on screen, the camera zooms into Mickey’s face, and his eyes open dramatically- and that’s all there is to it. Mickey 17 has some other big names in its cast, with Mark Ruffalo (The Avengers, Spotlight), Steven Yeun (Nope, Minari), Toni Colette (Knives Out, Hereditary), and Naomi Ackie (I Wanna Dance With Somebody) all set to appear.

The sci-fi thriller is currently set to release on 29th March 2024, but if you’re intrigued and that’s too far away, you can always read the original novel by Edward Ashton, which released earlier this year and is available here. In the meantime, you’ll just have to sit tight and wait for more info on the Parasite follow-up.
