Mid century accent chairs

Deep velvet sofas have had their moment, now the interior spotlight is firmly on ’60s style lounge chairs. We’re talking about that one statement piece to complete your living room and there’s no better era to be inspired by for iconic seating.

The 20th Century brought us some incredible creations that will forever remain at the forefront of design classics. There was the Egg chair by Arne Jacobsen and the Eames Lounge Chair by renowned design duo, Charles and Ray Eames, both of which are coveted investment pieces, but have recently garnered even more interest. In recent years, it’s been all about the Togo Sofa by Ligne Roset, a quick scroll on Insta will confirm, but now we want that one less slouchy, more refined, stand-out seat; the finishing touch.

Stick to respected vintage outlets for authentic finds, especially if you’re after an original ‘50s or ‘60s lounge chair. Founder of Narchie, the homeware marketplace app, says, “We’re seeing a rise in consumers reaching for nostalgic interiors, there is something comforting about pieces that remind us of the past and of simpler times. Mid century furniture is still looking to be very popular next year, I think because the style is timeless and pieces are well made.” You may even find slightly worn or damaged seating, but remember you can upholster and give a classic your very own contemporary update. Look to Poodle & Blonde for the perfect retro-inspired fabrics.

For modern day iterations Heal’s, Nest and The Conran Shop lead the way in reinvented classics. Jonathan Adler is a must for taking his one percent witticism and injecting into his mid century style designs. Admittedly, these buys may push the budget, however there’s no denying their investment value. Think about the quality, the durability and the timeless appeal. As interior designer, Miles Redd, once said, “Buy once… cry once.”

The Platner Arm Chair

Designed by Warren Platner 1966, this chair is composed of dozens of metal rods which angle upwards to support the seat cushion, back rest, and arms of the chair. It is a perfect blend between the armchair and relaxing chair, plus it comes in a gold, black, or silver nickel metal base and a plethora of cushion shades made of velvet, leather, or bouclé.

Form and shape take centre stage in '60s designs, while colours can be more muted allowing for bolder backdrops.

The Lady Chair

Marco Zanuso’s 720 Lady chair was awarded the gold medal at the 1951 Milan Triennale. It became an icon of Italian design in the 1950s and ’60s.  Zanuso’s design married stunning organic curves with technological innovation, making use of the most up-to-date materials and manufacturing processes available at that time.

The mid century accent chair will add instant elegance and timeless style.
