The Barbary Next Door

Taking inspiration from airy Moroccan courtyards and backstreet Andalusian bars, this quaint wine bar and restaurant is tapas by way of Fez. Pull up a chair at the window or the counter, or sit alfresco in the warmer months. 

The menu features classics like fattoush, shakshukit. and spiced octopus with yoghurt, as well as some Mediterranean-inspired dishes like burrata and fresh tuna crudo. Either way, it’s delicious.

Zizou Tagine

From the centre of London to the South-West, this Balham institution is like a neighbourhood restaurant. Fresh dishes are prepared onsite, and as for what to order, the clue is in the name – tagine is the speciality here.

Start with classic mint leaf tea, houmous and lamb kefta before taking your pick of vegetarian, lamb, chicken or fish tagine.

Kenza

The boldly named Kenza translates to ‘treasure’ in Arabic, which is quite a title to live up to. The Devonshire square spot does its best, full of traditional Moroccan, Turkish and Arabian interior design and featuring live performances and entertainment.

This buzzy spot is great for Moroccan and Lebanese food, drinks and shisha in an atmosphere that is part restaurant, part club.

For groups of six and up, you can opt for a special three-course set menu – the perfect way to sample the offering as widely as possible. Start with a range of mezze before moving on to traditional dishes like bameif or grilled sea bass. For dessert, a range of different baklava and fresh Moroccan mint tea.
