Aubrey Plaza Stars In Comedy, My Old Ass, About Meeting Your Future Self

If you prefer your comedies to be a bit more on the zany side, you might want to add new comedy-drama My Old Ass to your watchlist this month alongside films like Lee and His Three Daughters. Starring Aubrey Plaza (The White Lotus) alongside Maisy Stella (Nashville), it follows a teenager who takes psychedelic drugs and ends up meeting her future self- who offers advice and warning her not to take certain steps in life. Here’s all to know:
What is My Old Ass about?
Stella stars as Elliott Labrant, a teenager hitting her 18th birthday, and will soon move out of the small-town life that she knows and into the wider world- specifically, going to college in Toronto. Ready to leave her childhood behind, she goes on a camping trip with her close friends, Ruthie (Maddie Ziegler) and Ro (Kerrice Brooks). It’s out here in the wilderness that they decide to take magic mushrooms, but Elliott doesn’t quite expect where it ends up taking her. In her trip, she’s transported in time to meet her future self, who’s at a different point in life- close to middle age (and the older Elliot disputes this when young Elliot brings it up). This future version of Elliot is played by Plaza, and the two have a chat with one another about life.

Older Elliot dispenses life advice for her younger self as she’s quizzed on what the future might hold, and young Elliot takes it to heart, feeling like she now has the knowledge to navigate the ups and downs of life. However, she’ll find that some advice is harder to follow than others, and some things in life are too tempting to ignore. Specifically, Elliot finds herself drawn and unable to stop thinking about a boy she meets named Chad (Percy Hynes White)- the exact kind of guy her older self told her to stay away from. Everything she thought she knew about love and family is thrown into the air, and Elliot isn’t quite sure where she’ll end up at the end of her last summer before adulthood.
What else do we know, and is there a release date?
The coming-of-age comedy also stars a cast that includes Maria Dizzia (The Good Nurse), Seth Isaac Johnson (The Killing) and Carter Trozollo (Washington Black). You can get a glimpse of Stella and Plaza in the film’s official trailer, and catch it when it releases in the UK on 27th September.
