Netflix might be best known for making hit TV like Wednesday and Stranger Things, and documentaries like Pamela: A Love Story, but it’s also been behind some pretty great original movies. It’s set to continue this trend throughout 2023, with the corporation unveiling its newest slate of film releases for this year. Expect appealing mix of drama and comedy, action and romance, and some of the biggest stars on the planet, like Millie Bobby Brown and Adam Sandler.

 

 

Luther: The Fallen Sun

London’s most seasoned detective returns: 4 years since Luther’s last season aired in 2019, the grizzled DCI John Luther will finally be back on our screens in The Fallen Sun. A feature-length film continuation of the main TV series, Fallen Sun sees Idris Elba don the signature red tie and dark grey trench coat as he investigates a new case. A serial killer has been terrorising London, but our hero is behind bars, having been arrested at the dramatic end of series 5. But prison isn’t going to stop Luther, and he resolves to break out and catch the killer, ending their spree once and for all. Series creator Neil Cross is back on board to write, and Elba is joined by a winning cast that includes Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis, Dermot Crowley, Ruth Wilson and Paul McGann.

Your Place Or Mine

If romcoms are more your thing (or just need to find a Valentine’s Day movie), then Your Place Or Mine is just what you’re looking for. Starring Reece Witherspoon in her first romcom in years, along with Ashton Kutcher (who recently cameo’d in That 90s Show), Your Place Or Mine sees two best friends swap lives for a week. Debbie (Witherspoon) can’t live without her daily routine as a working mother in LA, and Peter (Kutcher) is an aspiring, free-wheeling writer in New York. Circumstances however force them to change roles, with Peter travelling to LA to look after Debbie’s child, and Debbie herself going to New York to pursue a lifelong dream. Jesse Williams, Zoe Chao, Steve Zhan and Tig Notaro also star.

Murder Mystery 2

A sequel to the 2019 Netflix comedy film, Murder Mystery 2 stars Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston reprising their roles as Nick and Audrey Spitz, a married couple caught up in a murder investigation. While the previous outing was set on a billionaire’s luxury yacht, this new caper sees the couple on an international journey trying to find their friend the Maharaja after he’s unfortunately kidnapped at his wedding. Nick and Audrey, now working as amateur detectives. Joining Sandler and Aniston this time around are Mark Strong, Melanie Laurent, Jodie Turner-Smith, Tony Goldwyn, John Kani and Adeel Akhtar.

True Spirit

The story of Jessica Watson, a 16-year-old from Australia who set out to circumnavigate the world, is adapted into this upcoming Netflix film set to release in February. Planning to become the younger sailor to travel around the world alone, Jessica (Teagan Croft) sets to work on figuring out how she’ll achieve the lofty nautical goal. Despite having sailed several boats before, she’ll still have to conquer her fears and endure months of lonely journeying in order to achieve her dream- but luckily she’s helped by her mother Julie (Anna Paquin) and father Roger (Josh Lawson). It’s based on Watson’s book True Spirit: The Aussie Girl Who Took On The World.

The Mother

Jennifer Lopez takes centre stage in this gripping new thriller that sees an assassin on the run trying to protect her daughter. Having been in hiding for years, J-Lo’s protagonist (currently unnamed) is forced to come out of her hideout to save her daughter from several fellow assassins out to kill her. As of right now, there’s not a huge amount of info that we know about the trailer, other than a teaser trailer a few months ago that seems to be teasing a Bourne-style thriller. The Mother is set to arrive in May, and also stars Joseph Fiennes, Omari Hardwick, Gael Garcia Bernal and Paul Raci.

Damsel

Millie Bobby Brown’s already the lead in Netflix’s Enola Holmes movies, and now Netflix is tapping her to play Princess Elodie in its upcoming fantasy thriller film Damsel. A spin on the old school damsel in distress tales, Damsel sees Elodie fighting for her life after she’s betrayed by a royal family that she thinks she’s married into. Now alone in a dark and treacherous cave, Elodie must use her wits and nerves of steel to survive not only the cave but the dragon that resides in it. Damsel also stars Robin Wright, Ray Winstone, Angela Bassett and Nick Robinson.
