Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling Reunite For Ocean’s Eleven Prequel
Barbie and Ken became the movie icons of the year this summer (alongside J. Robert Oppenheimer of course), and most of that was down the chemistry and star power of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. With Barbie being such a runaway success, casting them as a double act again is a no brainer- and that’s exactly what the upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel film is banking on…
Currently in the works at Warner Bros, the latest in the long-running heist series reunites the pair in starring roles, with Robbie also producing. There are only a few titbits of info we know right now, so read on to see what’s next for Hollywood’s hottest duo.
What do we know so far about the Ocean’s Eleven prequel?
Robbie and Gosling have been attached to the film for a while now – the upcoming Ocean’s film follows the early 2000s trilogy that starred George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt, helping cement them as true superstars. That trilogy was followed by Ocean’s 8, an all-female spin-off led by Sandra Bullock, and the franchise has since laid dormant. This new entry will take things in a new direction and is set to be directed by Jay Roach, best known for helming comedies like the Austin Powers films and Meet the Parents, as well as dramas like Trumbo and Bombshell.
Rather than a modern high-tech heist, though, the prequel has been teased to turn back the clock to the 60s. Decades before Clooney and co-raided Vegas, Ocean’s 11 was originally a 1960 “Ratpack” film starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. The film didn’t get particularly good reviews at the time and is overshadowed by the 2001 version, but the new Robbie/Gosling prequel wants to bring back that classic 1960s aesthetic and feel.
Is there a release date?
There’s not a lot in the way of plot details out there yet, but the Ocean’s prequel will apparently be heading to Europe (where Ocean’s Twelve was set) during the 60s. We don’t know precisely who Robbie and Gosling will be playing, but it’s a safe bet that they’ll both be in on the heist and given the fashion of Barbie, they seem like a perfect fit for 60s hairstyles and big sunglasses. According to producer Josey McNamara, the film wants to “do right” by the franchise, and it looks like it’ll include some nods and winks to Sinatra’s original film and the more successful remake. The prequel is still gearing up for production, so don’t expect it to arrive very soon, but until then, keep your fingers crossed that it’ll be “Kenough”.
