After what felt like the most extravagant award season in years, the night we’d all been waiting for finally arrived in all its red carpet splendour. It was a celebration of the big names in fashion, as stars showcased creations from Dior, Louis Vuitton and Armani, winning their spot on the Oscars 2024 best dressed list.

From Ryan Gosling‘s unforgettable performance of ‘I’m Just Ken’ to Emma Stone‘s second Academy Award win, the night failed to disappoint and that’s before we’ve even mentioned the dresses. Speaking of which, when accepting her award, the Poor Things actor announced that she’d split the back of her custom Louis Vuitton dress while watching Gosling’s moment with the mic. An admission that only made us love her more. The seafoam green jacquard gown was simple yet statement-worthy with a dramatic peplum that, despite the wardrobe malfunction, made it to our favourites.

In the build-up to the ceremony, it was, as ever, a spectacle of lavish gowns, many of which were black, perhaps as a nod to the current state of the world. Although, it was suggested on social media that Margot Robbie’s black sequin Versace dress was more of a reference to her Oscars snub, calling it her ‘revenge’ dress. An obvious departure from the Barbie-inspired outfits, the leading lady still looked sensational.

Carey Mulligan’s monochrome archival Balenciaga gown was the epitome of old Hollywood glamour. Nipped in at the waist only to flare out into a white tulle train, the dress had all the red carpet drama you’d expect… and some. The addition of opera gloves – she wasn’t the only one to add them – simply elevated the whole ensemble to something utterly timeless.

Similarly, Zendaya wowed in her antique rose silk Armani dress and Bulgari earrings. Also in Giorgio Armani Privé was Lupita Nyong’O. An ice blue creation trimmed with feathers, it was a stunning homage to the dress she wore ten years ago to accept the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in Black Panther.

Cinched in waists, peplums and fishtail hems were the details of choice.

After a fabulous run of award-worthy outfits, including names such as Givenchy and Alberta Ferretti, America Ferrara got her moment in the all-too-famous Barbie pink. Apparently, it took 400 hours to make the custom Atelier Versace figure-hugging design and every minute paid off, as the Oscar-nominated actor looked every inch the star.

The Oscars 2024 Best Dressed list continues with dazzling silver gowns, specifically Anya Taylor Joy in Dior Couture and Florence Pugh in Milan-based fashion house, Del Core.

Meanwhile, the stars of the upcoming film Wicked, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, not only presented the statuette for Best Original Song and Best Original Score, but also stunned in flamboyant dresses honouring their characters from the Broadway musical adaptation.

Kirsten Dunst nailed minimalist styling with the most exquisitely cut Gucci gown, while in stark contrast Jennifer Lawrence served up one of the few prints of the evening. The polka dot Dior dress certainly stood out against the backdrop of many discreet garments.

So what was your favourite look? From Margot Robbie to Greta Lee, this is our take on the best Oscars fashion…

Silver dresses added to the glamour, but these gowns were modern, futuristic even. They felt youthful and dynamic, especially next to the sea of black creations.
