One of last year’s breakout hits in the TV world was Presumed Innocent, led by Jake Gyllenhaal, giving a typically riveting performance as a prosecutor accused of murder. The show wrapped up pretty neatly, and appeared to be staying put as a miniseries- but its huge success for Apple means a second season has been greenlit, and is swapping things up. Season 2 will feature a new lead (Rachel Brosnahan), a new case, and a new cast of characters- here’s all we know so far:

What will Presumed Innocent Season 2 be about?

With the second season, Presumed Innocent has been retooled into an anthology series: season one was a remake of the 1990 film starring Harrison Ford (which in turn was based on a book), but this time around will adapt entirely new material. According to Deadline, it’ll be based on Dissection of Murder, a crime-legal thriller set to be published next year. While plot details are scarce for both the book and its TV incarnation, the basic premise focuses on a defence lawyer, Leila Reynolds, and her husband, a prosecutor. The book’s plot synopsis mentions that she receives a case involving the high-profile murder of a top judge, and that, as she gets more and more involved in the case, she finds the prime suspect and defendant have taken a disturbing interest in her.

Who’s in the cast?

With Gyllenhaal and his character Rusty Sabich exiting stage left, things are set for an entirely new cast for Season 2. The central player in the story, Leila, will be played by Emmy award-winning actress Rachel Brosnahan, best known for her role as Midge in The Marvellous Ms Maisel and is stepping into the shoes of the iconic Lois Lane this summer in Superman. Leila seems to be a bit of a different character from those two, described as finding the case “way beyond her expertise” and trying to find the best way to sway the jury in the impending trial. There’s also a tease of some secrets of her own that she’s trying to keep from view, lest she wreck the entire process.

What else do we know, and is there a release date?

While Brosnahan is the main name confirmed to be appearing next season, the rest of the cast has yet to be revealed, and there’s still much we don’t know. A definite release date has also not been announced, but 2026 looks likely. You can watch the first season of Presumed Innocent now on Apple TV+.
