Romeo And Juliet Given Comedy Twist As It’s Told From The POV Of Romeo’s Bitter Ex

If there’s one Shakespeare play that’s been adapted more than any other, it’s probably Romeo and Juliet. The iconic story is once again being given a new twist in romantic comedy Rosaline, based on the 2012 young adult novel When You Were Mine by Rebecca Serle. The film will be released on Disney+ on 14th October.

This version of the tragic romance focuses on Rosaline, Juliet’s cousin and also Romeo’s recent love interest, who is left heartbroken when Romeo decides to drop her for the more famous Shakespeare heroine. Deciding not to give up, Rosaline vows to try and break up Romeo and Juliet’s romance and win her ex back. Starring as Rosaline is Kaitlyn Dever, previously known for her roles in Dopesick and Booksmart. The show will feature some pretty lavish costumes and set design (as you’d hope in a Romeo and Juliet adaptation), so there’ll be plenty of eye candy to devour.

The trailer teases the heartbroken Rosaline, resentful that Romeo and Juliet are now an item, telling Nurse (played by Minnie Driver) Romeo was “saying things to her that he just said to me… three days ago!”. As she begins scheming, she disdainfully (and ironically) comments “Romeo and Juliet… it doesn’t even sound right”. She tries to get Romeo’s wedding disrupted and cancelled, all while trying to convince Juliet there are other men more suited to her. The film also pokes fun at some of the crucial plot points of the original play, with Rosaline dismissing Juliet’s plan to fake her own death as “the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard”.

The dialogue is also contemporary, so don’t expect too many “where art thou”s, but instead a fun and wisecracking take on the romance you know seen through the eyes of the ex you don’t. The film will star Kyle Allen in the role of Romeo and Isabela Merced as Juliet, alongside Bradley Whitford as Friar Laurence and Spencer Stevenson as Paris.
