AI is the topic that everyone can’t stop talking about- and Hollywood simply can’t get enough of it. Recent films and TV like Black Mirror, M3GAN or Netflix’s TIM  all had themes of AI and how it might impact our world.

Apple TV+ is getting in on the genre with their new series Sunny, which follows a woman (played by Rashida Jones), who is gifted a smart, domesticated robot called Sunny. It’s now available on streaming, and here’s everything you need to know:

What is Sunny about?

Jones (known for her roles in Parks & Recreation and The Office) plays Suzie, an American woman who lives happily in Kyoto with her family. Her largely average and normal life, however, is completely changed for the worse when he husband and son disappear- considered dead in an awful and mysterious plane crash. She is, of course, devastated, but a kind of “consolation” is given to her from her husband’s tech company, which manufactures robotics. Enter Sunny: a domestic robot from a new, advanced fleet that the company has been working on, and is designed to help the grieving Suzie around the house.

Obviously, a domestic robot isn’t much of a substitute for loved ones, and Suzie largely feels disdain towards the bot trying to fill the gap. The series is described as a “dark comedy”, so expect plenty of back and forth between Suzie and Sunny as they get used to each other. But there’s potential for Suzie to find an appreciation for her new companion, with Apple’s press release saying that they “develop an unexpected friendship.” Meanwhile, questions still linger over that suspicious plane crash that took the lives of her family- what really happened? Was it just an accident? Suzie and Sunny eventually begin to uncover the truth of what happened to her husband and child, taking them both into a dark and dangerous world.

What else do I need to know?

The dark-comedy mystery will also star Joanna Sotomura (Everything Before Us) as the voice of Sunny, Hidetoshi Nishijima (Drive My Car) as Suzie’s deceased husband Masa, and Jun Kunimura (The Boy and the Heron) as Yuki, a roboticist.
