The king of kitchen dramas is back: the fourth season of smash hit series The Bear airs today, as we return to Chicago to catch up with Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and co. There’s plenty more stressful cooking sequences and high stakes drama to be found in this season, as it follows up on the growing rift between The Bear’s head chef and Syd (Ayo Edebiri), as well as Carmy’s struggles with his own demons. Here’s everything we know about Season 4 so far:

What went down in Season 3?

Season 3 continued chef Carmy’s story after he established The Bear restaurant and tried to bring the restaurant’s level (and fortunes) up a few notches, but the results he achieved are mixed. There were returning guest stars like Will Poulter, Olivia Colman and Joel McHale, and a litany of new ups and downs. By the season’s close, Carmy is still not happy with himself and the way he manages the restaurant, still trying to outrun his past, which keeps catching up to him. There’s particular evidence of this in the finale, as he can’t escape the abuse he received from David (McHale), his former mentor.

Syd, meanwhile, is still weighing up her future, and by the final episode, is experiencing a lot of anxiety over the looming decision she needs to take. In truth, it ends as it began: the future of The Bear is in doubt, and Syd seems poised to leave the restaurant altogether, driven away by Carmy’s behaviour. It was also revealing as it delved more into Carmy’s past, and further developed the characters of Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Marcus (Lionel Boyce), Tina (Liza Colón-Zayas) and Natalie (Abby Elliott)- but where will the future take us?

What can we expect from Season 4?

It feels like it’s crunch time in this season: following the mixed review the restaurant receives from The Chicago Tribune, which called it both impressive yet disappointing, and knowing that funding is in jeopardy, Carmy will have to go all out in these pivotal few episodes. The cooking business is always a difficult one, but clearly, there’s a lot of pressure building on his psyche if it fails. The other plot point that surely must be resolved soon is whether Syd will really leave – there’s an opportunity for her with Adam (Adam Shapiro), who’s looking to create a new fine dining establishment elsewhere. White and Edebiri are the show’s breakout stars, but Carmy and Syd look closer to parting ways than ever. The rest of the restaurant staff, meanwhile, will be trying their best to make The Bear profitable and keep the head chef happy- but is it all in vain?
