The Fish Hotel Review: The Tucked-Away Spot For A Cosy Cotswolds Weekend Away

27th November 2023 | By Natasha Harding

As the end of the year approaches, chances are, you’re ready for some much-needed R&R (come hither, December). But what if you don’t have to wait til Christmas? Located a stone’s throw from London, on the cusp of the Cotswolds, this cosy little retreat is just the ticket for a reviving, last-minute weekend away…

First Impressions

Nestled at the end of a long and windy road, the approach to The Fish – Farncombe Estate’s quaint luxury hotel – promises a soothing oasis, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I pulled up in the hotel car park not long after finishing work (the train from Paddington is just over an hour), and was greeted by a clear starry sky – one of the telltale signs you’re officially in ‘the countryside’. Perched on the side of a hill, the hotel’s varied accommodation options sprawl every direction from reception…

The Rooms

Unlike other hotels, you can choose from a range of different room options – perhaps best determined by the size of your party. For solo travellers and couples, the shepherd’s huts are snug little retreats set on the hillside. As for friends and families, the treehouses cater to larger groups while providing a unique lodging experience.

I stayed in one of the Coach suites, which resembles more of a classic hotel room style. Inside, the room was spacious, tastefully decorated and had everything you could hope for, even down to a board game should the weather turn.

What Sets It Apart

Whether you’re after a quiet weekend away spent in a modern, stylish suite, or would prefer a slightly more unique stay at the resident treehouses or charming shepherd’s huts, The Fish has something for everyone.

Located on the expansive 500 acre Farncombe Estate, also home to the beloved Foxhill Manor & Dormy House – think of The Fish Hotel as the more adventurous younger sibling to its neighbours. The hotel itself is enough to make you feel totally at ease, however, it also offers a plethora of activities to keep you entertained (more on that later).

The suite included not one but two TVs, a lounge area, sizeable bathroom (complete with a bath) and twin beds. The whole setup was perfect for snuggling up under the duvet and watching a film after a long day of walking.

The Facilities

Regarding things to do at The Fish, the facilities fall into two categories: Adventure and Zen. The former refers to a slew of activities you can try your hand at, including axe-throwing, archery, clay-pigeon shooting and hover-crafting.

Alternatively, if you’re more like me and looking for a calm and soothing pastime, you can make the most of the more mindful schedule, including crystal sound baths, reflexology and, this writer’s personal favourite, yoga classes at the on-site Cameo Studio.

Fans of a leisurely country stroll will also be glad to know that the hotel comes complete with its very own Boot Room, designed in conjunction with The Original Muck Boot Company, providing guests with boots for loan, maps of the area and walking equipment.

Alternatively, The Feasting Deck – an alfresco dining terrace for groups of 10-20 – offers a specially prepared BBQ banquet with impressive views of the surrounding woodland.

Food & Drink

For this editor, a holiday isn’t really a holiday without a proper breakfast, and this is something The Fish excels at. The combination of a menu and buffet means you won’t be short of options, ranging from big breakfasts to hearty porridge, with enough gourmet spreads to see you through lunch as well.

For dinner, book a table at the hotel’s fine dining offering: The Hook. Founded by Martin Burge, as you might’ve guessed from its name, the restaurant specialises in seafood and responsibly sourced fish. Highlights include the fresh tuna tartare to start, followed by Cornish mussels served in a rich white wine and parsley sauce (the largest mussels I’ve ever seen).

Things To Do Nearby

If you fancy stretching your legs outside of the Estate, you can take a leisurely 30-minute walk into town, crossing idyllic meadows in Wellington boots provided by the hotel. Broadway is everything you want from a Cotswold village – quaint streets, historic sandstone architecture and an overall laid-back feel.

While the shopping errs on the side of antiques, niche clothing and vintage-style sweets, my top recommendation is Broadway Deli. Inside the pokey, two-story shop, with shelves heaving with quality local and imported foodstuffs, you can take a seat at the in-built cafe. Downstairs, there’s a cheese counter and impressive spirits collection, while upstairs, you’re spoilt gifting ideas and more Torres crisp flavours than I’ve ever seen (did you know there’s a Caviar one?).

Another day, you might choose to have a picnic looking out at Broadway Tower – a grade II listed 18th Century folly, located 45 minutes walk from The Fish. If you have your own car and are looking to travel a bit further afield, you can visit Blenheim Palace (45 minute drive) in nearby Woodstock. A year-round family-friendly spot, Blenheim’s light displays and Christmas markets make it a must-visit destination in the lead-up to festive season.

The Verdict

If you’re in need of a relaxed weekend away where you can get back to nature and switch off from the goings on back home, this is just the ticket. Surrounded by picturesque scenery and equipped with gourmet food, outdoorsy activities, along with the perfect cosy setup for a night-in playing board games or watching a film, you can pick your own adventure depending on what your mind and body need.

How To Get There

From London, I recommend catching the train from Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh Station (approx 1 hour) and then booking a cab from the station to the hotel. Alternatively, if you’re planning to stay longer than a few days, driving or hiring a car will keep your options open in terms of activities, with the rest of The Cotswolds on your doorstep.
