We love thrillers at The Handbook, and are always on the lookout for new ones to sink our teeth into – which is why we’re intrigued and excited by the upcoming BBC four-parter The Guest, which is coming to BBC One and streaming on iPlayer this autumn. The new show follows the developing toxic relationship between a business owner and her employee through a winding, twisting plot that leaves you unsure of who’s playing who. It stars Eve Myles (Torchwood) and Gabrielle Creevy (In My Skin), and here’s all we know so far:

What is The Guest about?

Fran (Myles) is a successful business owner who leads a high-powered life and an affluent lifestyle. With money and influence coming easily to her, she seems like an enviable model for others to follow, which is exactly what she becomes for Ria (Creevy) when she hires her. Ria gets a job working as Fran’s cleaner, and is someone who has never been in a position to be able to stop and think about what she wants from life. The highly confident Fran, getting to know her, advises her to start questioning her position in the world, and where she might be able to take herself to become the person she wants to be. Ria, intoxicated by the self-assured advice and success of Fran, comes ever closer in her orbit, as a toxic relationship begins to form.

Ria heeds Fran’s words and starts to take control of her life and her goals, leading to a newly close and intense friendship between the two women who’ve only just met each other. But their lives are about to become even more intertwined when, as the BBC’s synopsis puts it, a shocking event occurs, and suddenly they’re both holding secrets. But as things begin to unravel, who is it who’s really in control? Is the once innocent and impressionable Ria now the one who’s manipulating Fran?

What else do we know, and is there a release date?

The story will be told in four hour-long parts, and also stars Sion Daniel Young (Slow Horses), Julian Lewis Jones (Invictus), Clive Russell (Game of Thrones) and Emun Elliot (The Gold). There’s no official trailer yet, but the miniseries is currently slated to release in the autumn on BBC One and iPlayer.
