The Handmaid’s Tale has become one of TV’s most popular shows since it premiered back in 2017, but this year the dystopian series is coming to an end with its sixth and final season. Elizabeth Moss will be back in her acclaimed role of June/Offred, as the story based on Margaret Atwood’s books comes to a close. We’re still a while off from the last season airing, but there are still a few details of what to expect.

What do we know about The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6?

2023 saw a lot of big shows end like Succession, Ted Lasso and The Crown, and now we’ll be bidding farewell to The Handmaid’s Tale and with it our heroine June Osborne. The 5th season ended with June, still in Canada, being split from her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle) as they try to escape to Hawaii after he stays behind and is arrested to ensure the safe passage of June and her daughter Nichole. But June has also been having a relationship with Nick (Max Minghella), and things don’t seem to have been settled between them. So, where do things go from here? Hulu hasn’t announced many details of what to expect yet from the last season, and the show has already begun to deviate from Attwood’s beloved original novel.

The Handmaids Tale

As June boards the train to get to an airport in Vancouver at the end of the Season 5 finale, she discovers that Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) and her young son Noah are also onboard, setting up that there’ll definitely be more of their story explored during the events of Season 6. As you’d expect from a final season, the action and stakes will be higher, as the omnipresent Gilead continues to threaten Canada, and June moves to take the authoritarian state down for good.

As June juggles her relationships with Nick and Luke and as looking after her son, the prospect of seeking revenge on Gilead and the Commanders grows ever closer. Speaking ahead of Season 6’s production, series creator Bruce Miller commented “It has been a true honour to tell the story of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and the chillingly relevant world, and we are thrilled to bring viewers a sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale”.

What else we know and is there a release date?

The Handmaid’s Tale’s last season is yet to receive a release date, though it’s scheduled to arrive this year on Hulu (a UK platform hasn’t been announced). While the series might be ending, Hulu has confirmed that work has started on The Testaments, the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale published by Margaret Atwood and takes place 15 years after the original. Stay tuned for more info in the coming months.
