Aimee Lou Wood Leads Real Life Legal Drama Toxic Town
Netflix has been knocking it out of the park with its shows recently- and its latest series, Toxic Town, looks like another one to add to your watchlist.
Featuring a cast of British talent including Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who), Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education), Rory Kinnear (The Diplomat) and Robert Carlyle (COBRA), it follows the events of the Corby toxic waste poisonings case that occurred in England over a number of decades, and specifically three women caught up in it. Here’s all you need to know.
What is Toxic Town about?
The miniseries is based on the true story of three mothers who were affected by the waste poisonings and the court case they were part of in the mid-2000s. The legal fight would become one of the biggest environmental cases in British history and concerned the community of Corby in Northamptonshire. Corby had become a crucial steelmaking town in the 20th century, but the main plant closed down in the 80s, leaving behind a large amount of toxic waste. The waste was removed from the site by the local council, but the carelessness of the removal exposed harmful chemicals into the atmosphere, resulting in a considerable increase in the number of babies born with birth defects and disabilities nearby.
The Netflix miniseries follows the subsequent court case that would come about in the 2000s, and three mothers of the community in their search for justice. The official synopsis says that the trio take on “a David and Goliath fight for justice. By tracing through the years of their fight, a terrible truth comes to the surface – one of stinging injustice.” Whittaker will be playing the role of Susan, one of the mothers whose family was affected by the release of the toxic waste, looking for answers as to how it could happen and why mothers like her had been ignored.

It was originally supposed to debut this year, but appears to have been delayed in 2025- so keep an eye out for more details in the future.
