Update Your Home With This Season’s Take On The Rattan Trend
We’re still loving the natural look and, as the days become lighter, we’re ready for more. More beautifully woven pieces, from armchairs to lampshades to add a touch of bohemian glam to our homes…
Some may argue that our love for rattan is no more a trend than jeans are in fashion. It’s a classic; a go-to, especially in those summer months. Rattan furniture has never really disappeared, only this season it’s about those stand-out accent pieces. Take Jonathan Adler’s Riviera Collection, less boho more global glamour the whole range is nothing short of spectacular and a far cry from the tatty garden furniture we often associate rattan with. There’s a distinct French ‘50s feel to it, especially within the craftsmanship. The reeds are steeped in water, hand-coiled and fastened to a framework, then finished with a satin lacquer topcoat to give the naturally warm tones a luxe sheen.
To add to the appeal, rattan, a tree-climbing tropical vine, is also eco-friendly. It grows extremely fast meaning it can be harvested much quicker than wood, it also benefits the people who live in the local villages often providing them with work. Plus, it’s highly durable. The move towards sustainable, hand-made products is greater than ever, so unsurprisingly this material fits the bill. Once skilled craftsmen have woven their magic, we’re left with a tantalisng selection of homewares to choose from. I mean, who could resist the playful colours of the ‘Cartagena’ placemat: the beautiful result of a genius collab between Cabana and Colombia Collective, a young brand dedicated to championing traditional craftsmanship native to the region.
Also working with local artisans is Sharland England founder, Louise Roe. Using 100% natural rattan, she created original designs, including tables, scalloped trays and plant pots each offering up a nod of nostalgia. For more substantial elements, this season Oliver Bonas brings us stunning art deco-inspired drawers and mid-century accent chairs. Additionally, Anthropologie, as you’d expect, nailed ‘70s boho with its hanging peacock chair. So much so, it really deserves a spot in our latest TV obsession, Daisy Jones & The Six.
Whether you go big or follow the likes of Mrs. Alice (see below) with delicate rattan details – think napkin rings and placemats – there’s no denying this is a look we can all get on board with. In a time of biophilic design and sustainable living, there’s no better natural, affordable material.
