Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh in a romcom drama: it’s a combination that looks perfect on paper, but hasn’t been tried before… until now. We Live In Time, set to release later this year, marks the first time the two Oscar-nommed actors have appeared together onscreen, and has a pretty simple rom-com set-up: a young up-and-coming chef (played by Pugh) and a divorcee (played by Garfield) have a chance meeting that leads to love, in a story spanning several decades. Here’s all to know:

What is We Live In Time about?

We Live In Time is being produced for the screen by A24, and is on track to arrive in cinemas in October of this year. Pugh, who recently appeared in Oppenheimer and Don’t Worry Darling, plays Almut, a young talented chef with her whole career ahead of her. One night while driving, Almut accidentally manages to run over the man who she will fall deeply in love with. That’s Tobias (played by Garfield, recently nominated for a Golden Globe for Under the Banner of Heaven), a recent divorcée who unfortunately happened to step in front of her car. The pair begin to bond in the hospital, despite the road accident, and over the next few weeks very quickly begin to fall for each other. “There’s a very distinct and real possibility that I’m about to fall in love with you” says Tobias, over a montage of their relationship.

While We Live In Time is billed partly as a romcom, but there’s definitely a dramatic element at play: the beginning of the trailer sees the two as a married couple in the future, telling their daughter about the need to talk about something “serious”.

Midway through, there’s the telltale shot of the pair sitting together in a doctor’s waiting room, and it appears the storyline will involve cancer. There’s a further montage of their relationship moving through “past, present and future”, with their first dates, pregnancy, the birth of their child and other intimate family moments. “I can’t bear the thought of being forgotten”, Almut says poignantly towards the trailer’s end – so stock up on tissues if you’re catching this one in the cinema.

Who else stars, and is there a release date?

The film is also set to star Adam James(Ashes to Ashes), Marama Corlett (Black Mirror), Aoife Hinds (Normal People) and Heather Craney (Torchwood). Benedict Cumberbatch is also a producer through his company SunnyMarch, and the film is set to have a limited release later this year on 11th October.
