It’s no secret we at The Handbook love a mystery crime drama, with recent shows like The Long Shadow, Under The Bridge, and A Murder at the End of the World filling up our evenings. But when it comes to mystery writers, is there anyone better than the queen of crime herself, Agatha Christie? Netflix seems inclined to agree, judging by the fact that it’s currently developing a new version of one of her classic novels, The Seven Dials Mystery. Here’s all you need to know:

What do we know so far about The Seven Dials Mystery?

There have been countless Christie adaptations over the years, with Kenneth Branagh’s successful Poirot films being a recent example- but now streaming giant Netflix wants to tackle one itself. The Seven Dials Mystery, published in 1929, doesn’t feature Poirot or Miss Marple and instead focuses on a cast of characters at a fancy country house in the mid-1920s. Lady Coote and Sir Oswald and their guests at the house one night decide to play a prank on Gerry, a guest staying over who constantly oversleeps. The prank involves eight clocks being set to go off, one after another, but when morning comes, one of the clocks has gone missing and things have gone very wrong- Gerry is dead. What happened to him? And where is the missing clock?

Netflix’s version will adapt the story as a “witty, epic and fast-paced drama”, and Broadchurch creator and writer Chris Chibnall has been tapped to script it. Produced by some of the people behind The Crown and Good Omens, it’ll be directed by Chris Sweeney, who worked on BBC thriller The Tourist. Of course, with any good Christie adaptation, you need a solid cast.

The Seven Dials Mystery will star Mia McKenna-Bruce (Persuasion) in the lead role of the young Lady Eileen Brent, who decides to investigate the mysterious case unfolding at the country house. Meanwhile, The Crown’s Helena Bonham Carter will be joining her in the cast as Lady Caterham, while The Hobbit and Fargo star Martin Freeman will be playing Superintendent Battle.

When will The Seven Dials Mystery release?

Currently, there’s no word on when The Seven Dials Mystery will hit Netflix, but filming is confirmed to be underway and a promo pic of McKenna-Bruce reading the novel has been released. It’ll likely arrive only next year.
