Masters of the Air and The New Look have both been WWII dramas we’ve watched this year, and if you enjoyed those then keep a look out for the upcoming Hulu series We Were the Lucky Ones. Set during the war, it follows a Polish family who are torn apart by the invasion of their country, but are nonetheless determined to try to live normal lives. It stars Joey King (Bullet Train), Logan Lerman (Hunters) and Henry Lloyd-Hughes (The Irregulars), and is coming to streaming later on this year.

What is We Were the Lucky Ones about?

The Kurc family, who live in Poland, find their lives wrecked when the country is invaded by Germany at the start of the Second World War in 1939. Being Jewish, they face a particularly heightened risk, and they’re forced to try and escape and survive from the threat of persecution. The series is adapted from the bestselling book of the same name by Georgia Hunter, which came out back in 2017, and tells a tale of endurance and resilience. Joey King and Logan Lerman play two younger members of the family, brother and sister Halina and Addy, with Halina having planned to travel to Paris to see her brother before the war broke out. “My family, I keep writing to them over and over… it’s like writing into a void” laments Addy in the series’ official trailer, as we see shots of the German army closing in on Polish cities.

Who else is in the cast?

‌With Addy and the rest of the family separated, they all try to find each other again and reunite safely, but this will be a difficult task given the dangers they face- “I’m aware of the stakes” says Halina before she heads out to try to find other family members, despite warnings not to. Three generations of the Kurc family are featured in the story, with King and Lerman being joined by Henry-Lloyd Hughes as Genec Kurc, Amit Rahav (Unorthodox) as Jakub Kurc, Hadas Yaron as Mila Kurc and [profile-link]Robin Weigertas Nechuma Kurc. The trailer ends with Yaron’s character Mila remarking how “the only thing I know for certain is that there’s no reason that I should be alive, but I am. And that means I have to keep going.

Is there a release date?

Currently, the WWII drama is set to release on Hulu on 28th March, but a definitive UK release date has not been announced. We’ll keep you up to date with more info, but for now you can watch the trailer below.
