Discovering new and stylish work outfits can sometimes feel like an oxymoron – especially when the weather is as indecisive (read: miserable) as it’s been in London recently. But that’s not to say they don’t exist. In fact, there are plenty of elegant combinations you can incorporate into your 9-5 wardrobe, with the help of a few timeless staples. Here, our Editor rounds up five new looks to have on rotation for your next week’s worth of office days, along with where to shop the key pieces…
Okay, let’s start by outlining our starting point: the non-negotiables of work attire. Depending on your office, you’ll likely need to adhere to a formal, or at least smart casual, dress code. In addition to looking the part, you’ll also want something comfortable enough for a full working day—particularly if you’re running around town for meetings.
Lastly, something we view as a ‘must’ is that the look has a fashion-forward feel. Notably, while that might not necessarily mean wearing an outfit that incorporates all of this season’s biggest trends at once – an exhausting task in its own right – adding small new details here and there can give your classic combinations a fresh edge.
So, without further ado – here’s a week of work outfit ideas to inspire you…
Adding small new details here and there can give your classic combinations a fresh edge.
Monday: Relaxed Suit & Knit
A relaxed trouser suit is an ’80s MVP that features heavily in this Editor’s work-drobe. Throw a cable knit sweater around your shoulders, and add a pair of slingbacks and you’re read to hit your stride for the week ahead.
Tuesday: Layered Shirt & Jumper
A crisp white shirt and darted trousers are two foundations of a hard-working corporate wardrobe. Give yours a trend-led finish by teaming a pigmented jumper (we love red – it is the colour of the season, after all), with printed flats (leopard is everywhere right now).
Wednesday: Slouchy Knit & Skirt
Opt for a more preppy-inspired get-up by teaming a pleated skirt with a collar poking out the top of your jumper, and finish with Mary-Janes and socks. This pairing is a sure fire way to give Parisian chic, for minimal effort.
Thursday: Shirt & Tailored Trousers
We said it before, and we’ll say it again. An oversized shirt and straight trousers are nothing if not versatile, but they can also be worn on their own to create this timeless look. Pair with a top handle bag and satin ballet flats for a decidedly 2024 feel.
Friday: Waistcoat & Wide-Leg Trousers
The old saying of ‘desk to bar’ doesn’t bear as much significance on my adult life as I once thought, except for on Fridays (or Thursdays, depending on whichever is your last day in the office for the week). The waistcoat is equal parts chic and polished, making it perfect for taking you from AM to PM, with your tote slung over one shoulder.
