Young Sherlock: Everything We Know About The New Amazon Series

Everyone knows Sherlock Holmes and recognises his trademarks- a deerstalker hat, a keen mind for deduction, and his trusted investigating partner John Watson- but what about Sherlock before he became the world-famous consulting detective? Amazon Prime Video is working on a new series, named Young Sherlock, which adapts the book series Young Sherlock Holmes, and reimagines the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to depict the much-loved character in his late teens. Here’s everything to know:
What will Young Sherlock be about?
The series has a big name on board in the director’s chair: Guy Ritchie, who recently released his series The Gentlemen on Netflix. You might remember that Ritchie directed two Sherlock Holmes films that starred Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson, but the new Prime Video series is actually in a whole new continuity. The young Sherlock Holmes we meet here is studying at Oxford University and is not based at 221b Baker Street. He’s also not the tall, cool man he later becomes, happily expressing his opinions unfiltered and generally being, well, a teenager. But life after university is nearing, and being a detective requires discipline and growing up.
Who is cast?

This incarnation of Holmes is played by actor Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who appeared as the young Tom Riddle/Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, before later roles in The Woman King and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (also directed by Ritchie). Soon enough, there’s trouble in town when a murder occurs in Oxford, and of course, Sherlock ends up investigating. On his way to solving the who, what and why of the death, he’ll uncover that there’s a global conspiracy. Of course, the young Holmes is some years away from the events of A Study in Scarlet in which he meets Watson, so don’t expect him to appear in this show.
However, the cast will include Colin Firth (The Staircase), playing a character called Sir Bucephalus Hodge, while Fiennes family member Joesph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale) will play Silas, Sherlock’s father. Also in the mix are Zine Tseng (3 Body Problem) and Natasha McElhone (The Crown).
When will it release?
The series is currently filming, with eight episodes planned, and you can expect it to likely arrive next year in 2025.
