2023 has a plethora of exciting movies coming out this year and one of the biggest highlights we’re excited for is the upcoming Asteroid City, the latest film from West Anderson following The French Dispatch back in 2021.

The official trailer and first look photos arrived a few days ago, giving a glimpse into what’s set to be the director’s first sci-fi film and its ensemble cast, which features Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson and Bryan Cranston.

Here’s everything we know about Asteroid City

Set for release in June, Asteroid City is set in 1950s America, as students and parents from across the country gather in a (fictional) desert town for an annual junior stargazing convention. This being a Wes Anderson movie, the residents of the town and those visiting seem to be pretty quirky and whimsical enough- but something even odder is afoot, with the trailer teasing some kind of alien presence looming over the town.

While none actually appear in the trailer, their possible existence is what brings the characters together and feeds a lot of their conversation. But things look set to turn upside down during the convention, with Jason Schwartzman’s character Augie Steenbeck saying “the world will never be the same”.

While the plot is mostly under wraps, what everyone’s talking about is the film’s huge ensemble cast, including Hanks (in his first Wes Anderson film, believe it or not), Johannson, Cranston, Edward Norton (who recently appeared in Glass Onion), Jeffery Wright, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Maya Hawke, Steve Carrell, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton, Rupert Friend, Jeff Goldblum, Hong Chau, Matt Dillon, Sophia Lillis, Rita Wilson and even Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker.

It’s not clear how big each of those actors’ roles are, but Schwartzman’s Augie seems closest to the film’s main protagonist. Of course, the trailer also features plenty of Anderson’s inimitable style, with pastel colours and flat, symmetrical shots, all with the song “Last Train to San Fernando” playing in the background.

Perhaps the best part is that you don’t have long to wait for Asteroid City to debut: it’s set to arrive in only a few months’ time with a cinema release on 23rd June in the UK, with a premiere at the Cannes film festival. Meanwhile, it might be time to endlessly the scroll the Accidentally Wes Anderson Insta page while you wait.
