Good news: one of last year’s best new TV shows, Big Mood, starring Nicola Couglan (Derry Girls) and Lydia West (It’s A Sin), is coming back for a second series. A comedy-drama that depicted realistically the difficulties of bipolar disorder and the changes we all experience in our 30s, it was definitely ripe for more, so we can’t wait for its return. While we don’t have a release date for when it’s returning to Channel 4, there are a few early details that have been teased- here’s all we know:

What will Big Mood Series 2 be about?

Big Mood’s first series introduced us to best friends Maggie, played by Bridgerton and Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan, and Eddie, played by Lydia West of Years and Years fame. The longtime friends share a special bond, but as with many friendships, the realities and pressures of work and life in general had begun to pull them apart. But another very difficult issue also causes pressure on their friendship: Maggie’s bipolar disorder, which, despite her best efforts, becomes hard for Eddie to deal with in their relationship, particularly due to depressive episodes and other problems. The ups and downs of this friendship are told with humour as well as emotion and sensitivity to mental health issues in general, something that will carry into season 2.

Series 1 ends sadly, with the decade-long friendship that we’ve begun to care about over the six episodes breaking apart, with Eddie leaving Maggie to get into a taxi as things simply become too difficult- but we’re left on an open-ended, ambiguous note, setting up future episodes. So where will season 2 take Maggie and Eddie- and us the audience? Channel 4’s official synopsis makes clear that Eddie’s departure really was a turning point in Maggie and Eddie’s relationship, with it having been a year since the two last saw each other, or even had any contact at all. But, there’s a wedding that sees Eddie return, and suddenly they’re back face to face again. Weddings might be a time for love and reunions, but are Eddie and Maggie ready to repair their friendship and move on? Or is there really no going back to the old times?

We also know that Eddie has seemingly begun to build herself a new life, and has a new friend in her orbit, Whitney, described as “infuriatingly positive” and a “spiritual healer.” Much of the rest of the plot details and casting have yet to be confirmed, but hopefully, Season 2 of Big Mood should be on our screens by the end of the year. We’ll keep you up to date when more news is announced, so stay tuned.
