Are Boxer Shorts For Women 2023’s Most Unlikely Trend?

7th August 2023 | By Astrid Carter

They may be a regular in the drawers of most men but boxer shorts for women are having a moment. From beach looks to weekend brunch and date-night dressing, could the humble boxer be summer 2023’s most versatile, comfy and cool trend? These five Instagram looks are certainly saying so. Here’s how to work the most unlikely trend of the season with aplomb…

‌Whilst the boxer shorts for women trend feels very now, the look has been trickling into our Instagram feeds for some time. Pioneers of so many mega trends of the last few years is The Frankie Shop. Just think of the linen co-ord, the OTT oversized blazer – would they have been as big if The Frankie Shop hadn’t done them first and with such flare? Probably not.

‌Another such trend TFS have spearheaded is the boxer and it’s slowly gaining traction for styling options all over socials. The brand’s dedication to an androgynous aesthetic plays particularly well into the genderless trend, as well as the playful ‘underwear as outerwear’ ethos.

‌Other brands to check out are Hommegirls, Speltham, With Nothing Underneath and Sessei, who all do that boxy, cotton, traditional striped boxer so well. And if you’re willing to part with £490 for a pair of briefs amidst a cost of living crisis, Miu Miu have created the ultimate high-end namecheck emblazoned version. No? Head the high street for some excellent options from Zara, Motel Rocks and Uniqlo instead.

Comfier than denim shorts, cooler than a beach cover-up, add a pair of boxers to your holiday wardrobe and thank us later. Lean into the borrowed from the boys ‘90s feel and fair with a terry toweling bucket hat, chunky flip flops and crochet accessories.

LOOK 2: With A Black Blazer

A bit like TikTok’s current obsession with the ‘wrong shoe theory,’ matching a pair of boxers – that are usually seen as underwear – with something quite strict and smart like a classic black blazer, just feels cool. Keep the rest of the look simple with off-white accessories and chunky gold hoops.

LOOK 3: The Full Set

Easy throw-on co-ords have become a summer staple and this season, we’re here for the boxer/shirt combo. It feels a little more modern than a linen set but is just as easy breezy should we have another city heat wave – we live in hope.

‌Make like Insta star Felicia Akerstrom and add more elevated accessories to keep the look a little polished. We love Sessei’s vibrant green option paired with more classic tan finishing touches.

LOOK 4: An Athleisure Take

Is this the perfect weekend look for early morning breakfasts and running errands?

We think so. Lean into the comfort of the boxers trend and pair with an athleisure slogan sweater, sporty socks and the cosiest footwear of choice, the Birkenstock Boston.

Always ahead of the curve is our favourite French girl via London, Camille Charrière. Seen here in an evening-worthy look, she pairs boxer-style shorts with heels and a leather blazer.

‌The key to pulling it off is layers. Take a ribbed vest – we love this metallic option from Zara in the evening – and layer it over an unbuttoned smart shirt, before slinging a leather blazer on as a finishing touch. The point-toe heels are a great juxtaposition for the pyjama/undergarment feel of the shorts, whilst a Barbie fashion-inspired rhinestone bag adds a pop of colour and fun.
