Actor Emma Mackey, who made her name as Maeve in Sex Education, stars in comedy-drama Ella McCay, which is set to release in UK cinemas this month. Also starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Lowden, Woody Harrelson, Kumail Nanjiani and Rebecca Hall, it tells the story of the idealistic Ella McCay, who is in line to become the governor of her US state. Here’s everything you need to know:

What is Ella McCay about?

Ella McCay is written and directed by James L. Brooks, whose previous work includes Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News and co-creating The Simpsons. It follows the titular Ella, who is an idealistic lieutenant governor of her (unnamed) state and her in her mid-30s. She tries to balance her often stressful work life with the problems she has at home with her family. Jack Lowden plays her husband Ryan, while Jamie Lee Curtis plays Helen McCay, her aunt. Her relationships with her husband, brother (Spike Fearn) and father (Woody Harrelson) are complicated, yet she still strikes an optimistic tone when it comes to politics.

Speaking of politics, the young Ella is given the surprising news that the sitting governor (Albert Brooks) and her boss will be stepping aside, leaving her to step into the role, which, of course, is a significant step up in responsibility. She’s always been ambitious- but can she live up to the challenge and the expectations now resting on her shoulders? Somehow, dealing with her dysfunctional family and personal life might actually be a harder task than running an entire state. Also in the mix are the ex-girlfriend of Ella’s brother, Susan, who is played by The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, and Ella’s mother, Mrs McCay, played by Rebecca Hall. The film is also narrated by Ella’s secretary, Estelle, who’s played by the voice of Marge Simpson herself, Julie Kavner.

What else do we know, and is there a trailer?

Given the cast and crew, Ella McCay is certainly one of the more anticipated films releasing this December, and it’s a good one to watch over Christmas. The film releases in UK cinemas on 12th December.
