The next few months are packed with hilarious new comedies coming to our screens: Based On A True Story is Kaley Cuoco’s satirical take on our obsession with true crime dramas, Lift sees Kevin Hart try to save a plane from certain doom and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is finally arriving in cinemas in September.  But if you like your comedy a bit more off the wall and surreal, Prime Video’s new TV series I’m A Virgo is for you. It stars Moonlight’s Jharrel Jerome as Cootie, a young man who just so happens to be a giant.

Here’s Everything We Know About I’m A Virgo So Far

I’m A Virgo is written and created by Boots Riley, best known for his film Sorry To Bother You, and puts an absurdist twist on your standard coming-of-age tale. At its centre is Cootie, a young Black teenager who lives a sheltered life due to his defining feature: he’s well over double the size of an average man, 13 feet tall to be exact. He’s kept hidden by his aunt (played by True Detective star Carmen Ejogo) and uncle (Uncle Buck’s Mike Epps), who fear for his safety and self-confidence.

Of course, being a giant even as a baby means it’s a challenge, but the family keeps things fairly smooth- until he’s one day discovered by band of teenage activists, and his life is upended. As Cootie finds himself in the outside world for the first time and meeting new people both friend and foe, he starts to discover his identity and his path in life. Amazon’s stylistic trailer for the series sees him going on joyrides with friends, clubbing and generally living life as a teenager.

The Oakland, California set series premiered the first few episodes at the South by Southwest film festival in March, and while its creator hasn’t given much else away about the plot, Riley did hint that the oddball series is an allegorical commentary on topics like identity, race and class. The show also stars Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight), Bretty Gray (On My Block), model Kara Young and Olivia Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth).

I’m A Virgo is set to hit Amazon Prime Video on 23rd June
