Over the years, Vicky McClure has become known for her roles in shows that keep you on the edge of your seat- Line of Duty and Trigger Point for example, and now she’s back with a new thriller series that’s arriving on Paramount+ today.

Insomnia taps into the uneasiness of having no sleep, with McClure playing a mother who is forced to investigate her own past when she develops a bad case of insomnia. If you’ve just finished shows like Red Eye  and The Long Shadow, Insomnia is your next thriller fix.

What is Insomnia about?

Becky is a mother who’s approaching her 40th birthday, and seems to have a perfect life: a good career that she’s dedicated to, a supportive and loving family, and apparently not much that could go wrong. However, she begins to fear for her health and her future when she finds that she can no longer sleep, with insomnia suddenly gripping her life. It particularly worries her because of a personal trauma that preys on her mind: her own mother also had a case of not sleeping before she turned 40, which caused her to create a severe psychotic breakout that turned violent. Her mother pointedly told her that she would suffer the same fate, and that Emma and her family have something intrinsically wrong with her that causes it.

As the lack of sleep and her turmoil begins to pile up, the world that Emma knows begins to fall apart. Two of the most important things in her life- her legal firm at which she’s been highly successful and on the verge of promotion, and her marriage to husband Robert (played by Tom Cullen). As she tries desperately to keep things together, her patience is tested by these strains and her daughter Chloe (India Fowler) having reached the difficult teenager stage.

What else do we know, and where can I watch?

Emma will have to delve into her past and family life in order to make sense of everything and stop herself from spinning out of control. Along with flashbacks of her mother Patricia (Corinna Marlowe), she also meets up with her sister Phoebe (Leanne Best), who seems to have answers concerning their childhood. The series is based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Pinborough and is set to be six episodes long. You can catch it today, 23rd May.
