With the arrival of May, there’s a new royal sighted on menus across London. The Alphonso mango, aka the king of fruit, holds a special place in the Indian calendar, symbolising the arrival of sun-soaked summers.

In London, mango has found its way into brunches, lunches, drinks and desserts in the form of colourful sorbets, cocktails and more and we’ve sourced the best picks from across the city for the season. These are our picks of mango on the menu in May:

Jamavar

Jamavar has had a mango makeover this season, with its Alphonso mango terrace that pays homage to one of India’s most-loved fruits. For the month of May, the restaurant will be serving a bespoke Alphonso mango tasting menu that features Chef Surender Mohan’s joyful creations including the Chandni Chowk ki aloo tikki (potato tikki served with spiced white peas, sun-dried mango, yoghurt, tamarind, and raw mango chutney) and the meen manga kuttinad (halibut and raw mango cooked with fenugreek and Kerala spiced coconut milk).

Tamila

After a delicious curry at Tamila, there will always be room for their mango soft serve. The dish tastes like frozen mango lassi, perfect to enjoy on a warm summer day. Refreshing, summery and the perfect way to enjoy mango this season, it’s a must-try on the menu for sure.

MiMi Mei Fair

MiMi Mei Fair’s spring special dim sum feasting menu, Baskets in Bloom, draws inspiration from the Cantonese kitchens in Guangzhou and Hong Kong. After enjoying a colourful dimsum basket and your chosen main course, there’s a fresh mango dessert to look forward to. The coco-mango vegan sundae with toasted coconut flakes, fresh mango and coconut caramel drizzled on top sounds like the perfect way to end a spring feast.

Kahani

This Chelsea spot is our go-to Indian restaurant for a special occasion. And for summer, there’s nothing like a glass of cold mango lassi – a favourite on the menu here. Plus, there’s a delicious gulab jamun cheesecake with lemon curd, mango and basil sorbet that makes the perfect dessert. And don’t miss the Peacock mocktail made from orange juice, mango juice, lime, matcha tea syrup, soda water and kiwi.

Gymkhana

Inspired by the elite clubs of India meant for socialising, dining and cricket, Gymkhana is one of London’s best Indian restaurants. The lunch menu here features an exciting array of flavours that include unique takes on classic Indian dishes. They’ve got an interesting shrimp sorpotel, Goan cafreal salmon tikka and a unique-looking beetroot chops pao. But we’ve got our eyes on dessert, more specifically, the cardamon and basmati rice kheer with fresh mango and sorbet.

El Cenote

We love a good mango cocktail and this one looks off the charts. El Cenote, a new cocktail bar with a Mexican food menu has a host of summery dishes on offer that you can wash down with a pour of La Guadalupe, a fruity mango margarita that captures the essence of Mexican summer dining.
