In the mood for an engrossing crime thriller? We’ve already had Sydney Sweeney’s riveting drama Reality and are excited for Benicio del Toro’s darkly intriguing Reptile, but if you’re looking for a more adrenaline-filled experience, check out Mob Land, starring John Travolta.

Set in a small town in the southern United States, the film centres around a local sheriff trying to keep the peace as a robbery goes wrong and he finds himself battling against the New Orleans mafia.

What is Mob Land about?

The Grease and Pulp Fiction star plays Bodie Davis, a small-town sheriff who might look grizzled, but is approaching retirement and has softened around the edges. He’s understanding of those in his community and is dealing with old age and winding down his career. That’s why he keeps an eye on young car mechanic Shelby (Evil Dead’s Shiloh Fernandez), who seems to have good intentions but is naive and in need of money to support his wife and child.

Unfortunately, the financial squeeze gets too much and Shelby is attracted to dangerous scheme set up by his reckless and ignorant brother-in-law Trey (Entourage’s Kevin Dillon).

What else do we know?

Their town is in the middle of a growing drug crisis, and so the most lucrative target available for robbery is a pill mill making opioids and Shelby is picked as a getaway driver. Accepting the offer on the pretense of easy money and a quick escape, things don’t go as planned and Shelby is pulled into a far more violent and bloody affair than he expected.

Of course, Sheriff Davis is drawn into the fiasco, and the stakes are raised when a mobster (True Detective‘s Stephen Dorff) arrives who’s set on getting the money back no matter what. Mob Land is a story about the cycle of crime and violence, with Davis all too familiar with how easy it is to be pulled into the criminal world.

Who else stars and is there a release date?

In addition to Travolta and the other cast members, Mob Land stars Ashley Benson (The Loneliest Boy in the World) as Shelby’s wife Caroline and Timothy V. Murphy (Sons of Anarchy) as Ben.

The film is the directorial debut of Nicholas Maggio, and arrived in cinemas in the UK from 25th August.
