From sportswear looks still influence millennials today to cocktail dresses that will live rent-free in our heads forever, no Royal did fashion quite like Princess Diana. With the return of The Crown coming to Netflix this month for its sixth and final season, we’ve taken a deep dive back into the incredible, iconic wardrobe of Lady Di and recreated four Princess Diana fashion looks that work for 2023.
The Crown has had us hooked for six seasons now, not only for the gripping drama, a somewhat brief history lesson in every episode and, of course, the fashion. Season six is no exception and feels even more poignant because a lot of us remember the stories and – when it comes to Diana – iconic fashion looks when they were played out in real-time. There was the aqua blue, high-cut swimsuit captured by the world’s media atop a South of France yacht, the ‘revenge’ dress and the low-key Ralph Lauren shirt tucked into jeans combo.
What Diana did sartorially, women the world over follow and are still doing so today. For a Royal, particularly at the time, she pushed boundaries, she was clever and quick and alluded to things (remember the black sheep jumper?) and she certainly sold papers with a single outfit.
Scroll on to recreate four of our favourite Diana looks of all time…
Look 1 – The Original Sports Luxe
A gym look that still feels so modern, Diana’s quintessentially ’90s take on activewear has been recreated time and time again.
The high street has loads of great varsity-style sweaters at the moment and you can’t beat Skims to comfort and stretch with their cycling shorts. Swap for black leggings if you can’t bear the cold and make sure you tuck a good quality sports sock over the top – we love Le Bon Shoppe’s Boyfriend style.

Look 2 – The Men’s Casual Shirt
Sheer effortless perfection. A man’s Polo Ralph Lauren shirt tucked into high wait jeans. So simple, so effective.

Look 3 – Classic Navy Tailoring
We loved Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Diana in Season Six, in this Riviera-inspired holiday look.
Make it more Autumn/Winter appropriate with a classic double-breasted navy jacket – another Diana classic – and polished accessories.

Look 4 – The Iconic Sheep Jumper

One of Diana’s most talked about looks is surprisingly low-key on the surface. The now iconic Warm & Wonderful sheep knit with one single black sheep standing out – we all know what she was trying to say there – recently sold under auction at Sotheby’s, New York for an eye-watering $1.143 million.
You can still buy your own through the brand’s website (currently on pre-order in some sizes ) and the whole look of indigo denim, scarlet kitten heel and frilly collar blouse feels just as modern now. In fact, it’s giving Copenhagen Fashion Week for sure.
