The worlds most famous detective is getting another TV series to his name this year: Sherlock & Daughter sees the iconic sleuth set out to unravel a case involving his arch nemesis, Professor Moriarty. He’s joined this time by a young woman named Emilia, whose mother was murdered, and as the two look into the case, she’s convinced that the two have a closer bond that he knows. Starring David Thewlis as Holmes, the detective series is set to arrive on screens later this year.

What is Sherlock & Daughter about?

Unlike the BBC’s TV hit Sherlock, Sherlock & Daughter is set firmly in the original Victorian setting of the Conan Doyle stories. Here, the sleuth is played by David Thewlis (best known for playing Professor Lupin in the Harry Potter series), and is older and less sure of himself than when he was a younger man. He also finds himself frustrated that he’s unable to solve a particularly difficult case linked to his longtime foe Moriarty (Dougray Scott), with his friends in mortal peril as a result. It’s at this low point that he crosses paths with the young Emilia (Blu Hunt), who is searching for closure of her own. Her mother was recently murdered, and of course, who else but Sherlock Holmes would be a better person to call upon?

What’s more though, Emilia has become convinced that the detective is in fact her long-lost father, and sets out to prove it- but Holmes himself is sceptical. With their different backgrounds and attitudes on life, they’re a mismatched pairing, but nonetheless learn to work together to crack each mystery. But going against Moriarty is always a dangerous game, and both will be put to the test.

What else do we know, and where can I watch?

The series will consist of eight episodes, each an hour long, and is set to arrive on screens here in the UK on Discovery+. No trailer has been released yet, but we’ll keep this article up to date when more news is announced. Meanwhile, Amazon is also working on a young Sherlock Holmes series, also set to debut in 2025.
