Everything We Know About Netflix’s Follow-up To Stranger Things, The Boroughs
Stranger Things only came to an end earlier this year- but its creators, The Duffer Brothers, are already bringing their next show to Netflix. The Boroughs lands on streaming this month, and centres on a group of retirees who band together to stop a paranormal threat. Starring Alfred Molina, Bill Pullman, Geena Davis and Clarke Peters, it looks like a slightly more “grown up” version of Stranger Things– here’s everything you need to know.
What is The Boroughs about?
The Boroughs is set within a seemingly quiet retirement community in the New Mexico desert, the usual, picturesque community that appears tranquil. A newcomer to the town, Sam (Molina), who’s wracked with grief and trying to move on with his life arrives to make it his home. But a disturbing “monstrous encounter” rattles him, with his claims and concerns being dismissed as the ramblings of a confused old man. He’s not alone in what he believes, though, and this leads him to join a small group of other town residents clued into the threat and trying to figure out what’s going on and what’s causing paranormal events.
If it sounds a bit like The Thursday Murder Club but with aliens, you’re perhaps not far off- and the team of retirees look to prove that just because they’re in their golden years, they haven’t got plenty to lose. Sam in particular knows all too well that time is finite, having lost his wife, steeling his resolve all the more. The other members of the group, played by Bill Pullman (The Sinner), Alfre Woodard (Luke Cage), Clarke Peters (The Wire) and Geena Davis (Grey’s Anatomy), are a mix of a “curmudgeonly ex-engineer, a sharp-witted former journalist, a spiritual seeker, a cynical music manager, and a brilliant doctor.”
Is there a trailer, and when does it release?
Netflix released the first full trailer in recent days, showing Sam’s first entrance into the town, largely uninterested in attempts to welcome him and wanting to be alone. That changes when he starts feeling like he’s seeing things and seeks help from the other residents. Much like Stranger Things, it looks like there’s some kind of sinister secret to that town that’s yet to be uncovered.
