It’s been a long time coming, but the BBC has finally revealed the first look at the hotly anticipated second series of The Tourist.

Starring Jamie Dornan as a tourist searching for his identity after waking up with amnesia in Australia, series 1 received critical acclaim and became 2022’s most-watched drama in the UK. The Tourist Series 2 is set to up the ante, with the action moving from Australia to Ireland as Elliot continues to search for answers.

What happened in The Tourist Series 1?

You’ll be able to see Dornan in the upcoming Poirot sequel A Haunting In Venice as well as Netflix’s spy thriller Heart of Stone, but his role as “The Man” in The Tourist has become one of the Golden Globe nominee’s most critically praised performances.

During series 1 (spoilers!), we learned that “The Man”’s real name is Elliot Stanley, and that he worked as an accountant for a mysterious drug kingpin known as Kostas. He also learns that his action in the past had led to the deaths of two women, amongst other misdeeds, and his guilt leads him to try to commit suicide. But he clearly survived, and now, having rediscovered his identity, Elliot is looking to learn more details about his past.

What’s the plot of The Tourist Series 2?

The Tourist Series 2 takes place in Ireland, and while it may be cooler there than in the Outback, the show’s plot is turning up the heat. Teaming up once again with Officer Helen Chambers (Birdbox’s Danielle Macdonald), who had seemingly given up on him last series before a last-minute text, Elliot heads over to Ireland. He’s keen to learn more about his and his life before his car crash that left him with no memory- and possibly more about his life before the crime.

However, things of course aren’t going to be easy, and his hopes of a quiet trip down memory lane are disrupted when both he and Helen are dragged into a bitterly contested family feud. Elliot is still preoccupied with his internal struggles and guilty conscience, and so Helen must discover the truth behind the larger mystery that’s following them both.

Who else stars?

There are not many more details other than that on the plot, but we do know some of the new faces who’ll appear: Connor MacNeil (Industry) joins as Detective Ruairi Slater, alongside Olwen Fouéré (The Crown) as Niamh Cassidy.

Series 2 will also introduce the McDonnell family, featuring Diarmaid Murtagh (Troy: Fall of a City) as Donal and Nessa Matthews as Orla. The synopsis also teases that “foes old and new” will appear, suggesting the return of some familiar faces. While there’s no definite release date yet, Series 2 is expected to air on BBC One later in 2023.
