Psychological Thriller We Were Liars Is One To Watch This Week

Amazon Prime’s new psychological thriller, We Were Liars, is out now and looks like an interesting summer watch. An adaptation of the book of the same name by E. Lockhart, the show stars Emily Alyn Lind (Gossip Girl), who plays a girl who finds herself washed up on a beach, with no memory of how she got there after having suffered a serious head injury.
Not quite The Summer I Turned Pretty (just similar beach town vibes), the show follows the journey of Cady Sinclair as she tries to piece together what happened to remember the events beforehand, discovering that the truth is more painful than she had imagined. Here’s everything you need to know:
What is We Were Liars about?
Cady (Emily Alyn Lind) is a 17-year-old girl from a wealthy, privileged family who all live an apparently happy, perfect life. The Sinclairs have a tradition of staying at a private island in New England called Beechwood every summer, where the very blonde family enjoys the sun, beaches and water to their heart’s content. But, as we find in the first episode of the series, this all changes for Cady when she wakes up in the middle of the night, alone on a beach, with no idea what happened to her and what injured her. Fast forward one year later and she’s still trying to recover from her mysterious experience, and still trying to discover the events leading up to her injury and washing ashore. She heads back to Beechwood in the hope that she’ll find those answers and some closure, but isn’t prepared for what she discovers.

The summer days before the incident are depicted as flashback, as we get an idea of the Cady pre-accident, who’s mostly carefree except for her romantic attraction to Gat Patil (Shubham Maheshwari), whose feelings seem reciprocal but are tempered by his worries that he won’t be accepted by Cady’s family. The Sinclairs, like many rich families in similar psychological dramas, are privileged but snobbish, with most of the wealth coming from Cady’s rich grandfather Harris Sinclair (David Morse). The family is more rigid and oppressive than it outwardly appears, with Gat being looked down on due to his background and race.

The central mystery of what happened to Cady is the main focus of the miniseries, but as we discover, the privilege and status of her family are key to understanding her life, something that Cady soon becomes aware of. It’s apparent that some secrets and revelations have been kept from her, and as she pieces everything together, she finds there are some painful truths that led to her traumatic injury.

Who else stars, and when can I watch?
The thriller also stars Esther McGregor (Babygirl), Joseph Zada (Invisible Boys), Caitlin FitzGerald (Masters of Sex), Mamie Gummer (Separation) and Candice King (The Vampire Diaries). It’s available to stream now on Amazon Prime.
