The Cuban Shirt Is Summer’s Must-Have Piece For Men

The Cuban shirt is very much having a moment this summer. From the runways of Celine Homme to just about every high street store out there, every menswear brand has at least one in their current collection. Scroll to shop the best for all budgets…
There are so many brands doing the Cuban shirt well, starting with Celine Homme, who under the creative direction of Hedi Slimane, have given theirs a rock’n’roll spin with Rockabilly-style cuts and a cool black and white colour palette. Hedi is no stranger to taking inspiration from musical subcultures and this is just the ticket if you want to make a bit of a statement but remain effortlessly cool. We’d style up with some high-waisted slacks to lean into the vintage feel, but it would look equally cool on the beach with trunks, bare feet and a pair of Ray-Bans.
Slightly more affordable than Celine’s £690 price tag but still an investment is the U.S. brand, Tombolo. These are the masters of the Cuban shirt who have made it their signature piece, along with coordinating shorts and various other retro-inspired pieces. The devil is in the detail when it comes to their designs, from the pastel-hued ric-rac embroidered collars to the cute martini glass designs, they will bring a heady dose of personality to your summer wardrobe. They’ve also recently launched a limited edition Sopranos line, directly taking inspiration from the cult TV show. The ‘Satriale’s’ red and white shirt is embroidered with the name of the famous mob hangout from the show and is sure to gain a few knowing nods from other fans of the show.
And on the high street, Zara has nailed the Cuban shirt many times over this season – check out the pale blue version embroidered with white florals – that all belie their humble price tags.
The Cuban shirt is a bit of a comeback hero this season and there’s no doubt you’ll get plenty of wear out of one.
Whilst H&M and Moss are the names to check out if you’re after something more understated than statement, we love the simplicity of the former’s off-white crinkled resort shirt that is smart enough for the office and dinner dates but relaxed enough to be paired with some chino shorts and loafers. Moss has a great selection of knitted styles that work well if you need a more informal look for a summer wedding.
