We’re entering that part of the year again where awards-tipped films tend to get released- dramas like Scorcese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and biopics like Priscilla already look like they could end up as Oscar nominees next year. Joining them is His Three Daughters, a tense drama about family dynamics, that’s set to debut at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

It certainly has a cast that could generate awards buzz: Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne and Carrie Coon star in the main three roles.

What is His Three Daughters about?

The film is directed by Azazel Jacobs, known for directing comedy dramas The Lovers and French Exit. Elizabeth Olsen might be best known for playing Wanda in the MCU, but His Three Daughters is her first film outside of the comic book franchise since Kodachrome in 2018.

She showed off her acting skills earlier this year as a housewife accused of murder in HBO’s miniseries Love & Death, and previously worked with director Jacobs on the Facebook series Sorry for Your Loss. Natasha Lyonne has also had a busy couple of years leading the second season of Russian Doll and murder mystery Poker Face, while Carrie Coon has appeared in both The Gilded Age and Boston Strangler.

Not much has been revealed so far about the film other than a few nuggets of info: the trio play three sisters, who reunite and come together when their father’s health declines. The story is described as a “tense, captivating, and touching portrait of family dynamics” as the sisters come to terms and deal with the illness of their father, and promises to be a true-to-life tale of resilience and family bonds. While there’s not much else to go on other than that description, anyone who knows anything about Shakespeare might notice a similarity to King Lear, the play in which the aging king’s three daughters are both united and divided as he falls ill.

When will it be released?

The first peek at His Three Daughters shows Olsen and Coon’s characters both with a smile on their face in each other’s company, but Lyonne’s sister looks more sombre- will this dynamic play into the film’s story? We’ll have to wait until the film’s premiere to find out more. A wide release in cinemas and streaming has yet to be announced, but the film festival takes place from 7th to 17th September.
