Everything To Know About Amy Adams’ Wild New Comedy Nightbitch

18th September 2024 | By Rufus Punt

American Hustle and Disenchanted star Amy Adams is starring in what might be one of 2024’s weirdest films: Nightbitch, a movie about a woman who suddenly finds herself turning into a dog. It’s based on the book of the same name, and has attracted some attention over its particularly zany premise on social media. Also starring Scoot McNairy (True Detective) and Zoë Chao (The Afterparty), the horror comedy is set to arrive on screens later this year. Here’s all to know.

What is Nightbitch about?

Nighbitch is adapted from the 2021 novel by author Rachel Yoder, which received acclaim upon release, and placed on several end-of-year award lists. It’s directed by Marie Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood), and centres around Amy Adams’ character, listed in the cast only as “Mother”. Adams’ stay-at-home mum is sick of her monotonous life, and close to the end of her tether, with McNairy playing her husband. She cares for her young son of course, but is struggling with motherhood and being able to connect easily with others, with her spouse apparently aloof to her problems. Not only that, but she also suffers from anger management issues (a plot thread shared in Ella Purnell’s upcoming series Sweetpea), and discovers that she can apparently turn into a dog.

The film’s premise isn’t entirely a straight horror plot- there’s quite a lot of symbolism and metaphor about being a mother and a wife. Mother is fed up and coming to terms with the fact that her career as an artist in the big city is now in the increasingly distant past, and that being a parent has completely consumed her. This new ability to transform into a hairy canine feels like an escape and a way to get some of her agency back- but how far will this new life take her? She might have a new freedom as a dog and being part of a pack, but what will the effects be on her marriage and on her relationship with her child that she so cherishes?

What else do we know, and is there a release date?

You’ll have to wait until Nightbitch releases to see answers to these questions and more, but for now you can watch the trailer below. The cast also includes Marry Holland (The Big Door Prize), Ella Thomas (Desperation Road) and Jessica Harper (Fatal Attraction), and is set to arrive in UK cinemas on 6th December.
