Love a good scare? New horror thriller The Woman in the Yard is definitely one to add to the watchlist – even if you see it through your fingers. In cinemas now, it tells the story of a family antagonised by a mysterious figure.

The mysterious woman sits in their yard and scares the hell out of Romana (Danielle Deadwyler), who decides she has to take action to save those she loves. It’s out now in the UK- here’s all you need to know.

What is The Woman in the Yard about?

Deadwyler, who was nominated for a BAFTA for her role in the biopic drama Till, plays Ramona, the mother of a family living in a remote rural area in the US. Her life was changed forever when she was involved in a car accident that left her badly injured and her husband (played by The Affair’s Russell Hornsby) dead. Alone as a single mother in this isolated farmhouse, she cares for her children and tries to work through her grief to move on with her life. She’s distracted from this, however, when the family spots a shadowy figure sitting on a chair in the yard outside their house, staring directly at them.

The figure, which seems to be a woman in a black shroud, does nothing but sit and watch, and when approached, only speaks to give seriously creepy and ominous messages to Ramona. No one knows who she is, what she wants, or where she came from, and it appears that she won’t leave. As Romana questions why the figure – human or not – is antagonising her and her family, she realises she’ll have to act fast to protect herself and her loved ones – especially when the woman tells her that “today’s the day.” Vulnerable from her injuries and only able to rely on her older son (Peyton Jackson), Ramona is terrified and sure the woman is coming closer.

What else do we know, and is there a release date?

The Woman in the Yard is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who made last year’s thriller Carry-On, and also stars Okwui Okpokwasili (Agatha All Along) as the Woman. The film’s official trailer introduces us to Ramona and her family – watch it below before catching it in theatres.
