From summer’s love affair with all things crochet to slinky satin styles that wouldn’t look out of place in a ‘90s rom-com, the halterneck top is making its way back into our wardrobes this season.

Jeans and a nice top is a fail-safe combo we reach for on repeat, but if you’re looking to refresh your wardrobe with new cute pairings, the halterneck top is a front runner this season. Although we might be parking our jeans for the next few weeks, halterneck tops are equally as cool when paired with shorts and skirts and provide a whole load of versatility – whether you’re spending summer in the city or heading off to the Mediterranean. Going to an evening event? Look for chic, silk styles for understated glamour or elevate your festival looks with a bold colour or pattern to make you stand out from the crowd.

Although the halterneck shape feels quite nostalgic – either free-spirited ’70s or girl band-esque ’90s, there are so many ways to wear it this season to make it your own.

If you play into a lazy girl summer style, work the trend in crochet – we love Johanna Ortiz’s Pwani cropped patchwork style that feels very Woodstock with a pair of flared trousers and beaded jewels (it’s also now in the sale – bonus), or a cotton peplum like Free People’s buttermilk yellow Alette top – cute and easy with your favourite denim shorts.

On the flip side, the halterneck can be really sexy and work well for evening events and date nights. We love Anine Bing’s liquid-esque Eliana top in milky off-white paired with wide-leg trousers and a red lip, or Nicholas’ Vera top in classic black and white polka-dots with a chic neck corsage. Wear it tucked into high-waist jeans for a playful date-night look or with a silky slip skirt for a summer wedding.

And for something elegant and super affordable, we’ve got our eye on Zara’s halter top with little bow details down the front. Minimalist but with something a little unique, it’s the perfect juxtaposition to this season’s baggy jeans trend.

From sexy styles to crochet knits and tropical prints, here are 24 halterneck tops to shop now and wear all summer…

If you’ve given your trusty tank tops a run for their money, a crochet (another huge SS24 trend) halterneck top will add a playful edge to denim shorts or loose beach pants.
